At least five people were killed and 27 others were injured when a Cairo-Aswan train derailed at the village of Ayyat in Giza on Wednesday morning, according to an Egyptian Ambulance Organization official.
Railway Authority Chairman Medhat Shousha said that the train was on its way from Cairo to Aswan and entered a siding where it collided with the buffer stop, causing three wagons to derail and then overturn, the Nile News website reported.
Shousha added that authorities are still counting the victims.
According to the ambulance official, the bodies of the dead were transferred to the mortuary at Ayyat Hospital. The injured have fractures and bruises on various parts of their bodies, he added.
The incident caused a halt to train services from Cairo to Aswan while emergency services responded.
