A team of Egyptian surgeons from the Southern Egypt Cancer Institute extracted a cancerous tumour from the stomach of an elderly woman yesterday, according to the official website of Assiut University, of which the institute is a faculty of.
Dr. Mustafa Sharqawi, dean of the institute, announced the success of the operation and explained that the patient had been suffering from severe abdominal pain and chronic constipation over a three-year history, along with the inability to move normally. CT scans and examinations enabled doctors to understand the problem before proceeding with the surgery.
The tumour, which had stemmed out of the right ovary, filled the abdomen and the pelvic area, took three hours worth of surgery to remove. The team of doctors, headed by Ibrahim Abnoul Oyoun (consultant and teacher of surgical oncology at the institute) managed to remove the tumor entirely but they also had to remove her two ovaries as part of the procedure.
