Re: Bang goes the bridge....
Interesting article, but not really a surprise though, I doubt if many people thought it would actually happen.

Re: Bang goes the bridge....
Hah!!
What would really surprise me is if the government took any notice of this court ruling.
The best that's likely to happen is a delay while formal legal advice is obtained (constructed?) to the effect that the islands belong, and always did belong, to Saudi Arabia.

They could instead construct a very long pontoon bride, just go around the islands.

Re: Bang goes the bridge....
Do you think that would sit well with the ordinary Egyptian, or would it create more trouble if they implemented it? (not that the government probably gives a toss anyway)newcastle wrote:Hah!!

Re: Bang goes the bridge....
It's difficult to say what the "ordinary Egyptian" feels. The anti-regime lobby used it to stoke up anger but I wonder how many were even aware of the existence of these islands beforehand. I'd bet at least half the population have never heard of them.Horus wrote:Do you think that would sit well with the ordinary Egyptian, or would it create more trouble if they implemented it? It wasn't handled well. PR is not one of the regime's strong points. It's yet another issue for those opposed to rally around but my gut feeling is that the overriding desire for peace and stability still outweighs any negative sentiment.
Friends, not that enamoured of the regime, when asked, shrug their shoulders and say "...well...what/who else do we have if Sisi went..."

Oh! Does that mean there won't be a flurry of confused travellers asking questions on travel forums about visa's, or more to the point denying the need for visas when visiting the Sharm el Sheik area. I've been wondering all along where the 'Cross the Bridges' visa kiosks will be and how much they would cost.

Re: Bang goes the bridge....
Last night I watched A Bridge to Far. 1977.
There is a great section of Elliot Gold having a Bailey Bridge built over the Son.
CO, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division.
Quite an eye opener and surprise....
