The Gentle Author

Post by Who2 »

Now this guy has been writing about the East End of London for years.
He writes about interesting stuff all about my area,
but today found this on Malplaquet House down the Mile End road.

Thanks for that Who, how long would it take to look round that place. Not exactly my taste but fascinating. Just about to get my hoover out and have a clean, will feel like easy work now, I could live there.

I wish the goods I hoard could be displayed so interestingly. Ohh...maybe I need to start with hoarding interesting goods, and have a bit more space than I presently do.

Yes, I know this house quite well, to say the least. My own house was just down the road from here in York Square. The immediate area where Malploquet House stands today was, in 1700 called Mile End Old Town, and before the house was built it was known as Bettamy Yard which held a pound.

The right up that the Dr has furnished us with foxed me a little, when it said down the road from Spitalfields , when in fact it down the road from Whitechapel.but then again, perhaps it may have advantages to similar effect, that when I sold my house, rather than say it was in Stepney, I said, the 'up and coming' Limehouse, which I must say added a further £150,000 to its value, and that was nearly five years ago.

I discovered this evening that Tim and Tod have recently put the dear old place on the market for the handsome price of £2,950,000. They bought the place in 1997 from the Spitalfields Trust,............love to tell you all for how much, but they would not thank me.

P.S. - How some one with such knowledge can compare this, for a better, dump with the then home of Sir John Soanes in Lincoln's Inn is beyond me, :wi .

Wonder if they will take all the contents with them when they move? Has anyone got photo's of the house from outside, I have looked on the net but can't find any.

You're on here late, Carrie.

Yes they are taking their 'collection' with them, much was previously bought a few years ago from a well known auction house in Fulham, South West London, known for selling over the top trash.

The front garden has always been much over grown and I'll kept, even now when it's on the market.

Yer, you've got it my dear Dr,.......Lots Road, or better known as Woodworm Ally.

I have now carefully read through your initial post above, and am a little amazed that one comment in the write-up refers to Sir John Soane's house and another to Charles Dickens. Strange it may sound, but both these persons were linked, and a number of the great authors works that are set around Lincoln's Inn Field, even the old Bleeding Heart, as you have recently posted on this site, was known and written about by the great man. As for either of these gentlemen being in the slightest association with modern day Malphoquet House, I assure you, they would have been most offended.

Travelling back to London next week, if I get delayed (re Southern Rail strike), I shall write up further on Soanes v Dickens.
