Winter Solstice, 2015.

Post by Brian Yare »

For those who are interested in precision, this year the Winter Solstice is at 04:48 UT on 22nd December.

This means that it is at 06:48 Egyptian Time, just after the sunrise at 06:32.

I wonder which day the authorities will choose for their "official party" at Karnak temple, but suspect they will be a day earlier.

As well as the alignments at Karnak and Deir el-Bahri there are other temples that were built to align to sunrise on the Winter Solstice. Assuming that I am in Luxor I am considering watching the sunrise from the ticket office end of Amenhotep III's temple. Other possibilities include the Isis temple at Shelwit. The small temple to Sankhkhare Mentuhotep on Thoth Hill is also on this alignment.

And for anyone interested, the next Full Moon is on 25th December, at 13:11 Egyptian Time. Could be a reason for a party?

The full moon will not be visible at Luxor at this time as it will be well the horizon between about sunrise and sunset. Do werewolves come out in the middle of the day?
