Egypt to hold national poll on daylight saving time

Post by HEPZIBAH »

Egypt to hold national poll on daylight saving time
The cabinet previously announced that clocks would go forward one hour starting on 1 May
Ahram Online , Saturday 11 Apr 2015

Egypt's prime minister on Saturday ordered a governmental think-tank to hold a national opinion poll to ask citizens whether or not they support daylight saving time.
Along with asking the Cabinet's Information and Decision support Center (IDSC) to conduct the survey, Mahlab also called on the media to hold polls.

The cabinet previously announced that clocks would go forward one hour starting on 1 May, but it is not clear if this decision has been suspended until poll results are announced.

Egypt first adopted daylight saving time in 1988 as a way to reduce electricity consumption, but in April 2011 the cabinet endorsed a decree to cancel changing clocks in summer.

The practice returned in May 2014, after fuel shortages led to electricity cuts nationwide.

In the summer of 2014, Egypt changed the clock four times, first applying daylight saving time, and then suspending it during the Islamic holy month of Ramadan to shorten fasting hours from dawn till dusk.

Standard time in Egypt is GMT + 2, and GMT + 3 during daylight saving time.

I had 24th April in my Diary for Daylight Saving Time this year. When did it change to 1st May? Will it happen? Who cares? It will not change the number of hours between sunrise and sunset on any particular day, and there is no logical reason why it will change energy consumption.

I remember the chaos when I visited Luor after the 2011 revolution. The airline had no idea abut DST. They announced the wrong time at arrival until I persuaded them to make a correction. On departure 2 weeks later they were still advertising the wrong time, and a lot of people missed their flights!

I am coming out tomorrow with Egyptair. I will advise anybody who will listen to check their departure times most carefully. My return is on the direct flight from Luxor to Heathrow. I will not be late!

Unless, of course I am late. In that case you can find me in a hole in the ground next to Stan. Please bring Stella!

Sorry, my netbook has the ability to lose characters at will, and I failed to notice those two. What is the Latin for mea culpa?

No daylight saving this summer: Egypt's prime minister

Egypt's Cabinet agreed on Monday not to switch clocks for daylight saving time this summer, and carry studies on the possibility of canceling the practice altogether in future years

Egypt's cabinet agreed on Monday not to switch clocks for daylight saving time this summer, and carry out studies on the possibility of canceling the practice altogether in future years.

The cabinet previously announced that clocks would go forward one hour starting on 1 May, but suspended the decision until a national opinion poll was carried out to ask citizens whether or not they support daylight saving time.

The polls, according to a cabinet statement, showed that most citizens disapprove of the practice.

Now to find out how this affects my EgyptAir flight on 4th May.

At present EgyptAir is still showing departure at 1100. This will get me to Heathrow an hour later than originally planned, which does not improve my chances of getting home by public transport on a Bank Holiday. I think that I am going to need a taxi from the station.

Brian is coming and going so frequently that it seems more like he has some business carrying stuff back and forth more than he is interested in Luxor itself. I mean why go home for two weeks and then turn around and come back again? And do this repeatedly over a few months time? Why not just come and stay for a while?

The limitations on my travel insurance mean that I cannot sensibly spend a whole season in Luxor. Also there are limits on the amount of NHS medication one can get and stash away. But thank you all for asking!

Ps: Well if that was the poll it's just been decided 'probably by the kitchen staff at the presidential palace to scrap the shifting of time.
That's not the 'alternating-intermittent shedding of time to affect that, one would need be divine.
Currently no-one on this Planet has yet reached that level of development. http://english.ahram.org.eg/NewsContent ... Egypt.aspx

Brian asked if DST would affect his flight on 4 May.

Egyptair informed yesterday that due to DST my flight on 3 May will leave one hour earlier - so I suppose that are expecting DST to be introduced!
