Morsi – Murder Charges. Govt. Accused of Killings.

Luxor has both Christian and Moslem communities and the politics of the Middle East are equally diverse. Air your views on the situation.

Morsi – Murder Charges. Govt. Accused of Killings.

Post by Hafiz »

Some people have a real grip on reality and priorities when dozens are being killed and wounded:

“A public prosecutor is reviewing complaints from local residents unhappy with the huge encampment on their doorstep.”

No mention that he will ‘review complaints’ of death. Maybe he’ll get round to it after he’s dealt with people worried about public nuisance.

Besides public nuisance the prosecutor has his hands full with another case:

“..authorities launched an investigation of him (Morsi) on charges including murder (this is a new one, previously it was being an escapee) stemming from his 2011 escape from jail during Egypt's Arab Spring uprising.”

If true, clearly a very serious crime. A failure to identify and take action earlier was obviously an oversight which now needs to be redressed by an accelerated process. However too much acceleration could lead to problems with other similar cases on the queue and stuck for some time in traffic ahead. Could lead to a freeway tail-ender crash . Surely they will clear the way ahead either by conviction or acquittal otherwise you run the risk of the home renovator – start 100 projects and finish none.

Morsi is in Tora prison – wonder whether he will get the comforts offered to its most famous inmate.

On another matter, even the BBC’s reporter on the ground, Sommerville, is saying that snipers are doing the killing. He claims to have seen them. The government is sticking to its script that the brotherhood is killing its own demonstrators.

The killings are leading al Baradei and the Grand Sheik to distance themselves from their previous public support for the regime. Given the demonstrations and killings were near certain it shows you what poor politicians they were not to have anticipated this. Maybe they've just cold feet or don't have the stomach for it. Baradei should resign the vice presidency if his protests about the killing are to be taken seriously. In the case of the Sheik he lost his independence and all ability to act as a honest broker through his public support, together with the Pope, for the regime. His previous announcement that he will go into seclusion until the chaos goes away seem to have had an effect on no one.

Religious leaders playing party politics risks kickback and is a game the don’t know how to play. In the case of the Pope, who complains about religion in politics, his actions shows a serious and dangerous inconsistency because he and the Sheik have dragged religion into this mess when they could have stayed on the sidelines and awaited developments whilst keeping their hands clean. Surely keeping religious leaders out of party politics at a time when the future is so uncertain and when there is already far too much religion in politics.

The US and EU are trying to keep their hands clean by protesting the latest killings (which tends to show that the believe the army is doing the killing) but they have the same problem as the Pope, Grand Sheik and the aged Baradei – they’ve already placed their bet, on a single horse, and they can't now get their money back.
