Opposition leader and former UN nuclear head appointed by army days after Mohamed Morsi was overthrown as president.
Opposition leader Mohamed ElBaradei was to be named Egypt's interim prime minister, according to sources close to the presidency.
Interim leader Adli Mansour summoned ElBaradei to the presidential palace on Saturday, the state news agency reported, without giving more details.
His appointment comes days after Egypt’s army toppled country’s first democratically elected president Mohamed Morsi following massive countrywide protests.
Al Jazeera's Sherine Tadros, reporting from Cairo, said the main question is how much power ElBaradei will have in his new role as interim prime minister.
"It is not really a surprise. ElBaradei was sitting next to General al-Sisi when he announced the oustre of President Morsi, which already indicated that ElBaradei was to take up an important role in the new government."
ElBaradei was to be sworn in at 8pm (18:00 GMT).

Re: Elbaradei to be named Egypt's interim PM
They were discussing this chappie on the news tonight. They [who knew him] said that he showed potential but refused to listen to sound advice from those closest to him. Sounds familiar.
You don't think that Egypt has a top secrete president cloning program do you?

ElBaradiei is, and knows it, an interim PM. He's a pragmatist: he'll do what has
to be done at this difficult time, including an attemp at reconcilition. I doubt
he'll want to be the president 6 months down the line, if that remains
the schedule.

Re: Elbaradei to be named Egypt's interim PM
Apparently he won't now be standing as interim prime minister. It appears there is some confusion around this.

I don't have a plan......so nothing can go wrong!
