Bridges and roads at risk of collapse

Post by DJKeefy »

A plan is being developed by the Transportation Ministry to maintain the country’s network of roads and bridges after a report revealed that many roads and bridges are at risk of further deterioration and collapse.

The plan comes after part of Berkat al-Sabaa Bridge in Monufiya collapsed last week.

The report identified extra heavy loads of trucks as the main reason behind the recent collapse of bridges.

The Transportation Ministry said in a statement on Monday, “The Roads and Bridges Authority has taken a series of measures for the safety of both road users and the road network and to prevent further collapses.”

Transportation Minister Hatem Abdel Latif, the statement said, held a meeting with the head of the General Authority for Roads and Bridges Ramzy Lashin, and the head of the Traffic Directorate Mostafa Rashid, during which they discussed requiring permits for oversized vehicles.

The ministry also said it will coordinate with port authorities to ensure that trucks do not exceed the maximum weight before leaving the port. The same approach is to be followed in cooperation with the Local Development Ministry for trucks carrying loads from quarries, and the Industry Ministry with regard to trucks carrying products from factories.

And I thought, by the title, it was going to be an article on Britain's broken infrastructure!
I might agree with you, but then we'd both be wrong!

I know when I left the UK over 10 years ago that they were always digging up the roads, but surely they can be as bad as roads in Egypt: potsholes, manholes missing, heaps of sand, stones sugar cane etc on most roads... Just on the way to the airport there is 3 stretches where the road has sunk that much causing a wave of tarmac, the bottom of cars scrape on the road if you dont go very slow, ive seen 2 accidents where people on motorbikes have lost balance and come off their bikes.

And they are right about overloading, Ive no idea how some vehicles cary such weight with how they pile it skyscraper high

.........by the way, talking of roads, if you look carefully at the road surface condition in the area around where they are, or are not, which ever the case, to build the new Four Seasons Hotel, next to the old Nova Hotel, you will notice its future will be part of the great hole,........you are warned.
