New Sites to Visit

Post by Winged Isis »

I know some new places (archaeological) in Luxor/Upper Egypt have been mentioned over the last year as being open again/for the first time. Could someone please play tour guide and pull them all together in a short list as there seems to be a few of us there or soon to arrive who would be interested.

I'd be interested too. The only ones I'm aware of are the re-opening of KV8 (Merenptah) and the little chapel of Qasr el Aguz near Medinet Habu.

The only other ones I know of are the Hibis temple at Kharga and the Serapeum and some other tombs at Saqqara. There may well be more!
I might agree with you, but then we'd both be wrong!

The tombs of Ptahhotep and Akethotep at Saqqara and Princess Meresankh at Giza.

You asked for openings of sites in Luxor/Upper Egypt but as it seems you're interested in Lower Egypt too ...

Last year two other tombs at Giza were opened at the same time as Meresankh - those of Seshem Nefer and Iasen in the Western Cemetery. There's no extra charge for these tombs.

Another three were supposed to be opened too, but someone has forgotten to tell the guardians !

About a year and a half ago, several New Kingdom tombs were opened at Saqqara, including the tomb built for Horemheb before he became pharoah in which his wife was eventually interred. There's a 30LE entrance fee for these.

A total of seven were supposed to be opened but again, the guardians seem to have not been informed and will claim that only three are open. A bit of baksheesh will get you into the rest.

Just read a post on TA stating that a limestone chapel belonging to Hatshepsut and situated in the open air musuem at Karnak is to open at the end of February 2013, its reported that there will be a seperate charge of 25LE to enter (some reports state 20LE but this is believed to be incorrect).

Apparently its a very good example of its type.

I think you'll find that the 25LE charge is for the Open Air Museum, where the restored chapel is situated, not for the chapel itself.
I might agree with you, but then we'd both be wrong!

The little temple to the south of Medinet Habu has been open for at least 7 years to my knowledge - by speaking to the guardian in the house on the north side.

But a lot of work has been done there recently, so access may be less easy.

I am struggling to think of many other sites in the Luxor area that might be classed as newly open, but occasionally, when one tomb closes for restauration, another opens at VotQ, VotK and Deir el-Medineh.
Good Luck

It's just as easy as ever to get in to the little Thoth Chapel - still no need for a ticket, but a little baksheesh to the guardian, who is really proud of the restoration seems to be the admission charge.
At Deir el Medina, one of the two tombs on the ticket, Inherka I think, is closed for restoration, but another tomb has been opened not far from the Hathor temple (can't remember the name). I visited it a couple of weeks ago - a difficult staircase, so narrow at the actual tomb entrance that even a small person rubs against the paintings in the entrance - no protective panels over these.
I might agree with you, but then we'd both be wrong!

There was a report on osirisnet in December that the restoration was complete and it was due to be reopened shortly. Maybe it was closed briefly to allow the work to be completed ?

Totally agree; have been once and would like to again. But it's not new, so has something been done there?
