Stan, I very often find myself disagreeing in the strongest terms with what you write, but your taste in (semi-popular) music is impeccable!
However, for me there would have to be stuff like 'Messiah', 'The Crucifixion' and a thousand or so hymns as well. Also the likes of Blind Gary Davis and Sonny Boy Williamson, and Cream! But then I couldn't do without the Watersons, or Steeleye either. Music is one of the greatest means of enjoyment we can ever have.
I'd hate to be invited onto Desert Island Discs!!!!

Bearded One, we sang "I will sing the wondrous story" to Calon Lan at the funeral of our old choir master; absolutely fabulous!

I love any kind of music :up
Although, since I was a kid of the 60's and 70's, what they called "Heavy Rock" was my geatest love.
I have a mssive list of Heavy Rock that I wont include here..
BUT, I do not like everything each of my favourite bands or singers produced.

Going with the past choices made, this is what I like from those.

Babooshka - Kate Bush
Classical - too many to list
Folk Music - worldwide
Come Tomorrow - The Yardbirds
Leaving on a Jetplane - John Denver
A new world somewhere - The New Seekers
Under Pressure - Queen
Money for nothing - Dire Straits
Songs by Cream

A diverse personal snippet:

Africa - Toto
I'd Like to teach the world to sing - New Seekers.
Where have all the flowers gone - Seekers
The Skye boat song - Various
Puff the Magic Dragon - Seekers
Who wants to live forever ? - Queen
Innuendo - Queen.
God gave Rock and Roll to you - Argent
Still I'm sad - Yardbirds
Lady of the Lake - Rainbow
Canon in D Major - Pachebel
Prelude in C Minor - Bach
Violin concerto - Mozart
Dying Swan ( from Swan Lake ) - Tchaikovsky
Mr Blue sky - ELO
Something inside so Strong - Labi Siffre
Watching the wheels go round - John Lennon
Iron Man - Black Sabbath

I swear my brain is 70% song lyrics
There's a time for everyone, if they only learn
That the twisting kaleidoscope moves us all in turn.

Went to see the Blues Brothers at Norwich Theatre before moving to Luxor and the guy who played "Huggie Bear" on Starsky and Hutch sang Minnie the Moocher he was brilliant.

Does anyone like John Lee Hooker or Howlin Wolf?? Two of the great Blues Singers.

I do appreciate Blues music, but tend not to listen to it much. Many legends have come out of the Blues era as you have pointed 2 of them out.

Blues had a great influence on many of the 70's more respected guitar players, Gary Moore included..

You like Parisienne Walkways ? Me too ! Sort of Blues meets the Waltz..

Here are those 2 legends Phil Lynott and gary Moore with one of my favourite versions of the song, as they NEVER played it the same twice..
The long sustain didn't quite work out, but he recovered well.. at 2:34

phpBB [video]

Its just great to watch these 2 people doing what they love so much...

Dont ask me why, but this is one song I really Love

The Darkness, I believe in a thing called love..

Must be the title.. :cg

As a result of an article in the guardian, I downloaded Yellow Submarine, and watched it last night - I hardly remember seeing it in 1968, but to me it hasn't dated, and was a most inventive use of cartooning.

There's an embedded video of Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds in the article

Howlin' Wolf and Sonny Boy Williamson were brothers-in-law. Not many people know that!

I've never heard Bob Dylan singing 'Hallelujah!', but I also think that the 'Old Man' (Laughing Len) cannot be beaten in singing his own compositions. We've been through this before on here, so there's no point in continuing that line of argument.

Vanilla Fudge? I also had that record, which I haven't seen for a long time, but it's probably my favourite version of that song. I seem to remember that 'You keep me hangin' on.' was perhaps the 'B' side? What was on the other side then?

How about Layton and Johnson? (Anyone else remember them, were they possibly more famous than Sam and Dave?) Or Chris Farlowe's unmatched rendition of 'Handbags and Gladrags'?

Chris Farlowe, The Out of time man, saw him 4 years ago in a blues show, he walked on stage and i thought he had tucked his twin up his shirt, he has piled loads of weight on.

Also so on the show was Mike D'abo, Bernie Gallagher, Tom Macguinnes, Mike Hugg. can you recollect these artistes and a common denominator, This Band was called the Blues Band, I have not said the other person who was singing, it would give away too much, but see if you can guess? Also can you think of the Mike Hugg and Tom Macguinnes connection?

Some other people I saw just before moving to Luxor was

John Maus, he was brilliant but passed away last year. Do you know who he sang with, give you a clue Gary Leeds was the drummer.

Barry Ryan, any one remember who his mother was? singing Eloise.

Marty Wilde and Kim Wilde

Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick and Titch,

Peter Noone

Bobby Vee

Peter Sarsted, Any one know who his half brother was?

Billy J Kramer and the Dakotas

Wayne Fontana and the Mindbenders

Marmalade

Swinging Blue Jeans

Pinkertons Assorted Colours

Used to love the Silver 60's Shows And living in the 60's was am amazing time

Marmalade I liked very much, as well as Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick and Titch. Also Wayne Fontana and the Mindbenders
Eric Stewart went on to form 10CC. The music was OK, nice, sweet, but lacking depth..

Swann and Flanders anyone ?

phpBB [video]

Which brings me nicely to Gilbert and Sullivan, I liked their musicals.. :)

HMS Pinafore.. Classic.

Could it have been the 'Wierd with the beard' Mann?

Peter Noone was almost as poor as Gilbert O'Sullivan, and I could never get away with Gilbert and Sullivan's work either. But I just 'gnu' someone would bring up Flanders and Swann, as they were an exceptional pairing, too.
