Does anybody know where in Luxor I might find something like artists canvasses to paint on? I really want some big pictures for my walls, but I like modern colourful stuff, not scenes or anything religious. When in Sharm a couple of years ago I saw a lot of artwork for sale, but I have no plans to visit there any time soon. I just can't find anything in Luxor like I have in my mind, so in desperation I am thinking about donning a Laurence LLewelyn Bowen frilly shirt and doing something myself with canvasses and a few cans of emulsion - it can't be that difficult, can it? hahahaha
Any help on the subject would be appreciated. Thanks in anticipation
There is an art supply shop in Luxor. They sell all the different paints and brushes as well as ready to use canvases and artboard. It is near Pub2000. [as you face Pub2000 turn to your left and walk to the deadend of the road in front of you and it is the last shop on your right.] If you are talking large canvases [over 24"X36"] you will not have any luck though. I would suggest getting the local carpenter to knock some 1"X1" frames to the size you want and go to the Government shop and get some medium weight calico and stretch it over the frames with upholstery tacks; once you have it 'drum' taught you can seal it with 2 coats of a 25% PVA to 75% water mix, [PVA is readily available from all the little DIY shops and is known by the brand name which I can't for the life of me think of! It is in a white plastic pot with a screw top and comes in three sizes, the bigger size is about 15Le.] leave it to dry and shrink back for a day or two before getting creative. Have fun and good luck.

Pub2000 is on the corner of Ibn Tallet St. which is the left turn before the New Pola Hotel in Khaled Ibn al Walid Street and the government shop is in El Medina el Monawwara on the right hand side down past the big police station.

Of course if looking for big wall canvas you could do no worse than going to the two art colleges here and buying pictures off the students who no-doubt could do with the money, just a thought....

That is true. The college does have exibitions of the students work from time to time.
All you have to do is find someone "in the know"
Thinking about it the Marsam Hotel holds exhibitions of art work which is always for sale.

Funny, I just bought with me several sheets of papyrus for a Norwegian contemporary artist

Thank you Who2 and BBLux for your input - I feel that I am now making some progress in my quest. I have no idea where the colleges are but will ask around. As for the Marsam Hotel, I googled that and found a place on the West Bank near to Hatshepsut - is that the place you are referring to?
That is the place, next to Merenptah. They do a nice lunch there in the garden and if you are around at this time of the year you can play spot the egyptologists as it is used as a dig house.

Sometimes loads of young female student artists turn up to paint from my corniche or sometimes my house much to the amusement of our local kids but no canvas's as yet spotted to warrant purchase..'we live in hope....

There is a really nice original art shop in the street after the Int. hospital going out of Luxor turning right off Television Street. It's on the lest-hand side as you go parallel to the hospital. It's called Art Home and is a sort of student collective owned and run by 9 graduate art students. They do all sorts of work , including original paintings, wood carvings, mirrors in reclaimed wood frames, leatherwork collages, hand made artificial flowers (made from natural materials). The prices are not too bad and they can create items to order.
KJB, I tried to find the shop that you described, but without success. We drove around the roads on all 4 sides of the big hospital in Television Street but couldn't see it. Which street is it in? You said parallel to the hospital, but I don't know which road you mean, sorry
Please would you be able to give me a starting point and some directions and we will go for another look. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in anticipation
