'Shrooms..............

Post by Who2 »

Today, we are thinking and talking Mushrooms.
many years ago MD and I were discussing growing shrooms. "can't be done, she said. But years move on and and mushrooms are available here but limited, so where do thy come from, what type are they, are they Egyptian, does anyone on here grow mushrooms ????
As, my cunning plan of then is still relevant now, and I need an income this year and something to go with the the mornings' fry-up.
All other ingredients, horse poo donkey, camel, pigeon substrata available including a few old deep & long disused tunnels.
Excluding spoors of various types..tbc.
All this came about because today I'm planting lily tubers supplied by a kindly forum member, and some shrooms grew under an amphora.
and he bouht me some 'black-pudding, mmm Thanks.......8)

Those intermittently available from KZ, are incredibly tasty for the type which they seem to be. I can heartily recommend chopping them finely and after frying; shovelling them into cheese traingle/aish fino sandwiches.

It's a little bit of heaven!

I can see this is another 'uphill struggle. we need damp else I will have to install sprinklers, KZ and other enterprising out-lets of the sparsely supplied single variety shroom, just wont hack it for me, when growing it's 24/7 365 days and no need of sun.
How much were your KZ shrooms as a matter of fact ?
Where did they originate as it's KZ [metro] all passes through a Cairo distribution center. Info I need Info........8)

We bought 4 trays of very good white mushrooms in 40 market a couple of days ago. 2 trays consumed and 2 trays flashed in a pan of olive oil and then frozen. Been doing this with the KZ ones for almost a year with great success.

Cool and moist is the trick and that can only be achieved up in the Delta region. It is never going to be possible here in upper Egypt except possibly for 1 or 2 months in the Winter perhaps. Maybe Kent Weeks would rent you a chamber in KV5 for the Winter?

There are two companies that have Mushrooms in Egypt: Mr Mushroom Co and Isis. Both bog standard closed cup variety. Every now and then they do sell the brown variety too, but not often. Usually sell for 10-15LE a tray. Also available are Oyster mushrooms .... you get a tray double the size and half the price with these ones, but these ones aren't a named brand .....probably chopped them off a neighbours tree for all I know!

Love the brown or Chestnut variety. We have not seen those down here in darkest Upper Egypt though

All you need Dr. is a controlled environment house. Simple?

Well, mushrooms tend to be menopausal and have "flushes". :)

The funny thing about these flushes in a controlled environment is that, in the UK at least the flush is countrywide. So it is very difficult to maintain a continuous supply.

Just after I first moved into my old place in the country the bottom field had a huge crop of mushrooms. The previous owner was pretty peeved as he had never had them before. After three years they virtually disappeared wit the exception of Puff Balls. We had many of these and some were pretty huge. 8)

Lots of organic matter and dark cool and damp.......
I get them on the lawn , and go into the fields on a misty autumnal morning and you get good pickings. They are the best, but there's a plethora of varieties to be found, I love a foray for natural food :P
The commercial varieties never seem quite as taste-ful

Now, if you want to grow magic mushrooms that is a different matter entirely!
I don't have a plan......so nothing can go wrong!

Back in the UK on the airstrip where I used to fly we had several years of mushrooms growing along the strip. We had to get there early on the days the strip was mown to grab them before they were decapitated. Then they disappeared completely.
