American Indian Wedding Blessing

Post by jewel »

This was read today at the wedding and I thought I would share it it was so lovely:

Now you will feel no rain
for each of you will be shelter to the other.
Now you will feel no cold,
for each of you will be warmth to the other.
Now you will feel no loneliness,
for each of you will be companionship to the other.
Now you are two persons,
but there are three lives before you: his life, her life and
your life together.

Go now to your dwelling place,
to enter into the days of your life together.
May beauty surround you both in the journey ahead
and through all the years may happiness be your
companion to the place where the river meets the sun,
And may your days be good and long upon the earth.

Treat yourselves and each other with respect,
And remind yourselves often of what brought you together.
Give the highest priority to the tenderness,
gentleness and kindness that your connection deserves.
When frustration, difficulty and fear assail your relationship-
as they threaten all relationships at one time or another-
remember to focus on what is right between you, not only
that part which seems wrong.
In this way, you can ride out the storms
when clouds hide the face of the sun in your lives
May your hands be forever clasped in friendship
And your hearts joined forever in love.

It was simply so lovely but sums everything up you would want to say :)

Yes I thought it was really lovely as it was a non-religious service - very simple and it just fitted. It was to be either that or an excerpt frpm Captain Corellis Mandolin and this won - not hard to see why :)

What a touching bit of verse. Do you know what Nation it came from? So much of the Native American culture has vanished- we must celebrate what remains. Chickasaw stewardship is working to preserve what remains for that nation. I am attending a Chickasaw wedding in August and will suggest this poem for the ceremony.

I agree that this is quite lovely. The reading seems to say everything you could want to say! I am also attending a Chickasaw wedding in the Spring! It is sad that a lot of the culture has disappeared but it is promising to hear about what Chickasaw stewardship is working to accomplish. Massinaw, I love the idea about the vintage car. It does sound very posh. :)

That is so interesting, ronnielane, I hope you will let us know how the Chickasaw wedding goes, I agree about stewardship
aah massinah whatever happened to you?

The wedding blessing I referred to was from the apache tribal group, a truly inspirational culture :)
I don't have a plan......so nothing can go wrong!
