My hobby website - Cyprus Stamps.

Post by Cyprus100 »

I started to sell the duplicate stamps my husband held in his Cyprus stamp collection on eBay towards the end of 2007 and did quite well with it, to the stage of opening an eBay shop. That was, until they changed all their fee structures...

I started to look into developing our own website and finally opened it in October 2008 - closing the eBay shop the following January.

The website is doing well and comes high in the search rankings.

My website has just been shortlisted as a contender for the Virtual Business Awards (VBAwards 2010) and I wonder if any of you on here would do me the honours of having a look and if possible adding your vote from this link: http://www.vbawards.com/2010/12/cyprus-stamps/

All you have to do is click on the link and then on the Vote button. No registration or any information is collected by the VBA website.

In case you are wondering about cheating or underhand methods, please note: VBA website provides each of the nominated sites with their own advertising link as well as twitter and facebook sharing icons. It's supposed to be a virtual business and we're encouraged to push our sites around the www to get the votes.

Thanks for taking the time to read and a big THANKS to anyone who takes the time out to Vote for us :)

The best of luck with the Award you have done well to get so far.

Our old neighbour in Hampshire did a similar thing with Indian stamps, but before the days of the internet, so he had to produce booklets every 3 months & mail them out. :(

You have my vote, the website was easy to get around. My Dad was an avid stamp collector when he was alive and my Mum still has his albums. I often wonder what they would be worth to someone who is a collector, for my Mother it is just a personal treasure.

Thanks to both of you for your votes :)

Sue,
Sadly not all stamps are of any great value these days, with the exception of a few... Strange as it may seem some stamps are worth more as used than in mint condition and it took me a while to get my head around that!
Cyprus has a few that are worth a considerable amount but they are few and far between.
However, given the current economic climate we've found prices have fallen a little and I suppose a bit like property, values can only be taken from the price that a person is willing to pay.... a few visits to eBay gives you an idea of current values but for stamps with variations (colours, watermarks, postmarks, perforation variants or errors) these are not so easy to spot unless you know what you're looking for.
If you ever decide to go down the route of looking at valuations, I would recommend you take photographs of the album pages and take a look on some different websites or forums. Valuation experts charge for their services plus a commission on sales! Something we don't do.... We're happy to help as much as possible but only in our are of expertise.

Yes, I can appreciate how your friend must have felt. A few of our regular collectors used to deal with the approval rounds but now are happy to buy from us where they can see the image before buying. They now even pre-order new issues in advance of their release date from us as they're comfortable dealing with us over time.
We've met some great people and have become firm friends with many of them over the last 2yrs.

Thanks again for taking the time to click!

You're welcome :)

We get so used to using the net that having to take photo's & then give accurate descriptions, because the printing process would lose a lot of detail (especially variations in shades etc) were a nightmare for him.

When will you hear the results? Do please let us know won't you?

Well, no news as yet - everyone who was nominated for the VBAwards are still waiting with baited breath and nobody appears to know when the announcement will be made.

I contacted the people running the competition myself only this week to be advised it will be very soon.......

I hope this works!

Thought I would send you a photo I took whilst visiting a friend of ours staying at the Apollonia Hotel on the seafront of Limassol on Tuesday 28th December.

Hardly a breath of wind but the sea was very high up to the beach and kept pounding over the breakwaters and the jetty. It was fab.

Another friend took her kids up to Ladies Mile beach at Akrotiri and had to turn back - there was no beach visible! :oo

I often wonder if our names are still spelt out on the beach, the only time I have been to Cyprus we stayed outside of the town of Limassol not far from the ancient city of Amathus, our hotel was right next to some excavations. We often used to walk the coast walk into the town, about 5 miles, one-day we did the classic Love stones. These are scans but if anyone ever spots them they will now know who did them.
