Autumn Swan Watch, some pictures

Post by Horus »

It was a lovely sunny Autumn day in the UK today, completely different to yesterday when it rained from dawn until dusk, so I decided to set off out for a few hours walk with my faithful little buddy Max the dog, seen here having a paddle.
Image

Each year I always keep a photographic record of a pair of Swans at a local beauty spot and this year was no exception, they have managed to rear to adulthood a brood of five signets. I must have timed my latest visit about right because part of the way around the lake, mum decided to take them on a training flight, so they must be close to leaving their birthplace before the Winter sets in.
As is always the case these things happen quickly and even though my camera was switched on it took me by surprised when they suddenly started to take to the air, I quickly raised my camera and focused! Low Battery! Low Battery! Low Battery! Oh ****!
A very quick off and on again gave me a last gasp of power to take two rapid shots, both of them were rubbish.
Anyway for what its worth, here it is.
Image

But all was not lost, I did get some amusing shots of mum and some of her brood doing a bit of “up tails all” to get at the pond weed that now available because the water level had dropped a little.

Here the whole family is together for the synchronised drowning lesson.
Image

This one made me laugh because what I thought was a reflection in the water is actually the signets head coming back up again, if you look close you can see the beak and an eye looking at you!
Image

Mum showing them how it is done properly.
Image

This was taken near the top of the pool and I still had a polarising filter on the lens.
Image

As you can see it was a lovely day with the Autumn colour just coming into the trees.
This is a favourite chill out spot of mine and if the water is still, the island in the lake gives a wonderful reflection in the water.

Are you sure that you didn't sneak into my flat, Horus, knowing I'm here and go for a little walk..?! It looks and sounds exactly like my place in Copenhagen, 10 min walk from where I live in the city, which is unusual. I did not have time to move my pictures from my old PC, as I got this here laptop the day before I went home to Luxor, otherwise I could prove it.

Now that you are there, you'll find a few things that need to be fixed by such a macho as yourself - you'll find all the tools you need. Feel free to use the bar, while you admire my collection of African art, but don't even look for my sacred collection of single malt!

You have sussed me out! OK I confess that I am just an itinerant traveller who happened to break into your home. Anyway saying as how I am here I may as well avail myself of the hospitality on offer. I am as you say quite a handy type, so I have fixed you that leaking tap in the bathroom and cured that squeak on the bed. As you can see from the photograph, I have also given the African carvings a bit of a polish and managed to get the dust off the illegally mined gold nuggets, at least now we know where your money comes from. I have done a thorough dusting and vacuuming and even washed those dishes you left in the sink, so the least you can do is tell me where the Scotch is hidden. ;)

I have at least two litres of Chivas, a bottle of Famous Grouse, Cuban rhum, tequila, Metaxa, ouzo, Cognac, Cointreau, Illy coffee liquer and much more.... Different kinds of Danish gourmet beer, lots of good wine, champagne...but the sacred drops are hidden in a secret room.

Please don't polish the antiquities, dust them lightly, they are magic.

Cute dog!

Irritating topic … from Post 2 on! Within one post of those delightful pictures we are directed towards someone's drinks cabinet, followed up by a paean to alcohol consumption. At least I now know to "Return to Index" after viewing the swans from now on

My message: It is incredible how it looks like the place where I live in DK, and since Horus would do that to me - he did yesterday in kitchen corner and recently on a more serious topic - and he has displayed his African statues in his blog, I think it was on Egypt4u, I mentioned it to be a little personal! I would have contributed, as a response, with my beautiful swan pictures, if I could, because there are so many similarities between our countries like I sometimes try to say, when people talk about the unique UK, but nobody finds that interesting, I know, so I am sorry to disturb.

I am "someone"? Thank you, TonyC! I am sorry to be so irritating. This happens all the time, but when I do it - slam! I don't think that I can take it anymore...

Why doesn't anybody say anything, when MY posts are turned into matters of UK4U...

Oh dear, :( not quite sure what to make of your post Bennu, although you usually write in excellent English, I am afraid that I don’t fully understand what you are saying here. Have I offended you in some way? If so I am very sorry.

Or are you annoyed at TonyC’s comment? I must say that I was a little surprised myself as I had only posted the pictures to share a bit of interest, maybe some people do not like any topic that diverges from Luxor itself? I really am not sure.

As it was getting late I took your reply as just a bit of harmless banter and replied in the same manner, but between yours and Tony’s posts I must admit to being a bit confused by it all, but nowadays that is not difficult to do ;)

It does take a lot of time and effort to upload pictures to the forum and to add a few snippets of information that I hoped would be interesting, but I may be wrong about this, perhaps others would care to comment on the worth or not of making such posts.

It was harmless and your reply made me smile deeply! Everybody will appreciate your beautiful pictures like LLL, Tony and I, and you will get lots of positive response for the quality and the feelings, it will awaken. They are indeed relevant for those down here, who feel a little longing for the four seasons, and make those who long for Luxor value the place, where they are, I do not doubt that. They touch me from your neighbouring country as much, especially since it looks exactly like my own "back garden" in Europe.

It was late, I couldn't sleep, and our little harmless joke made me feel very, very good. Tony appears arrogant today, I think, and I feel very bad about mentioning my Copenhagen nest and ruining the pleasure of swan watching.

But the pictures are still there to be enjoyed by everybody, including me, I hope that no harm is done by me.

I don't know if it is because of my language that I am so difficult to understand. Thank you for taking time to upload these wonderful pictures, for catching this European moment and sharing it with us all, for fixing my tap, and sorry for ruining the pleasure for Tony. I hope that I haven't disturbed too many others!

 (I probably have.)

One of the things I most enjoy about the forum is the manner in which topics slip/slide around just like real conversations. Going off at a tangent is one of life's little joys. I also appreciate the humour some members employ to make life a little more pleasant. Ascerbic comments are welcome too in that they provide a little spice when we are all prone to "ooh and aah". So bring it on Tony, Bennu and Horus. You have all made me smile this morning.

No sir, I like topics of most sorts, especially if they are accompanied by such lovely pictures. I was back in the UK for a while! For over 21 years I watched the swans' year from my home on the banks of the Thames in South-West London. I was still smiling at the memories when, bang!, I was hurtled from the river bank to a bottle bank. I can't take such dramatic gear-changes

Oh good :) it looks like a general misunderstanding all round then ;) and by the way Bennu, your written English is impeccable and it was no different on this occasion, unfortunately I could not quite get my head around what was being expressed in your post, more my fault than yours I think, but now you have made it very clear what you meant. :)

It does seem as though your homeland area is very similar to here in the UK and it would be nice to see some of your photographs of local interest, especially your Swans. :)
And Tony, you must keep your eyes on the road!

A bit of harmless banter, some slight misunderstanding, nobody has fallen out, all still friends :) :) :)

Nice pics as always Horus.......and if the UK is very much like Denmark Bennu then I would hope to visit your country one day. North west Europe and Scandinavia have so far escaped my holiday planning. :(

And I DO agree with Horus regarding more members posting some pictures from their homelands. Some of us do but how about you guys around Europe, in the States and those down under. Not to forget members spread across the UK. :)

I don't have very many swan pictures.....had planned to correct that last month with a visit to Abbottsbury Swannery in Dorset. Changed our mind and were glad we did, the weather turned out to be dreadful. :(

Took this one just recently, he wasn't too keen on me and pulled his head back and raised his feathers ready to respond to any threat.

Beautiful creatures. :)

Hamdulilah!

The swan happens to be the national bird of DK, officially chosen because of H.C.Andersen's The ugly Duckling.

I was in subtropical Florida many years ago, first time I left Europe, and in a park with beautiful birds and orchids that I admired, my Puerto Rican friend, who lived there pointed at a swan and said, that it was the most fascinating thing she had ever seen. It was truly exotic to her, and she did not know the name, but she had seen it once before. My English may not be bad, but I just learned a new word: Swannery :D .

If I were at my PC in DK, I would post some pictures of swans on a frozen lake at sunset, taken in January, that will have to wait until Christmas.

Lovely picture Grandad :) The cob bird always looks really good at the start of the breeding season when they tend to display quite a bit :)
