It was in a semi-rural area in cairo known as maadi, and even had a lawn(ish) and so I guess what works there may not in upper egypt.....although when I lived on the west bank still composted all kitchen waste/cardboard toilet rolls etc but could imagine there may be more of a snake problem but I really didnt find snakes in the compost perhaps it is co-incidental and they were just around, and just think - they would keep the rat population down! mind they wont come unless you add things like rice pasta cheese or bread, meat etc which should never go in compost....in the uk I just have lots of frogs from the pond!!
Turning is ok once it has heated up and agree turning does make better compost, but main thing in the heat is keep it wet and covered! If you had a plastic bin ....like some of the composting bins here that would work a treat .you need worms to make good compost
