well geraldine i am told by ny husband fava beans are used but yes you can use chick peas but make sure you soak them long like overnight or perhaps buy a tin ready to use:o

I used fava beans and soaked them overnight - the recipe for falafels is quite simple but the result was a disaster. They looked perfect but I couldn't eat them

well geraldine if you soaked them overnight did you cook them,i also suggested to try ready tinned chick peas which are ready to use :idea:

No I didn't because it didn't say so in either of the recipes I have. Now I bought 2 kg fava beans from Cairo and will try again. The (supposed) fava beans i bought from Finland, they look a bit different So maybe they weren't right kind of beans. They were called 'broad beans' which in many places are stated to be the same as fava beans but also I've read somewhere that they are NOT. I will report later what will happen this time
Blaah, do they sell peeled fava beans in Egypt...I can tell it's really hard peeling the beans Now I understand why everybody says it's easier to buy them at some street corner than prepare them yourself! Do you use only dried beans, you cannot use those that are fresh or frozen?
