I have read on another thread that we are a site that is visited by mainly Europeans. It may be the membership is made up of mainly Europeans, I cannot confirm that, but according to the flags shown we now have people ,members and guests, visiting us from 107 countries across 6 continents.

Seeing all the flags is a good reminder that not everyone is a native English speaker and we must all make allowances for the differences in the way we write. It's also a good reminder that you never know who is reading what you have written.

Ooh, we have someone from Tanzania on.
Never thought to log on when I was there, could have got it on the list earlier.

[face=Comic Sans MS]Thanks for that Lisak. I've got to update the list as I saw someone from Bhutan on line the other day. I've also made a note of few or the more unusual places that Iv'e seen online lately but not sure if they are on the list or not.[/face]

[face=Comic Sans MS]Ah! But it's no good making a post from somewhere exotic unless someone witnesses it's flag on our line. ;) :D [/face]

Probably sounding a tad pedantic, but surely it would be more significant if the only viewings counted were those made by those who are resident nationals, not any old tourist, if you are celebrating the world-wide appeal of the forum? :)

[face=Comic Sans MS]Sorry WI, I'm not 100% sure what you mean about that. :?

I started posting the various flags as seen after Keefy added the flag bit to our profile and the guest and visitor. I went through the whole members list to make sure I included the flags of all the members listed, and then added new flags as seen. Not all the countries represented have members in that location, but many of them do have people (or bots) who visit us regularly and read the posts here.[/face]

What I meant was, does it really count if one of the members logs on from all over the world when they are on holiday or business trips, just to get another flag? I thought the original post was about being surprised and pleased at the growing number of foreigners looking in or joining? That is, the increasing interest of the rest of the world in Egypt, and Luxor in particular. Surely that would be more significant and a truer indication of the success of the forum? Just a thought, not a criticism! ;)

Winged Isis, if a member comes to the forum without logging in, it would impossible to know that they are actually a member :) I think Hepzi is adding countries as she spots flags at the bottom of the front page, where they show up also for visitors.

[face=Comic Sans MS]WI - I think I understand now.

Although I can remember where most regular posters are from I wouldn't have a clue about the majority of the, now 1000 +, members who may or may not log in to just read or play games so it would be hard for me to be able to tell if any given flag showing on the bottom line of the screen were a member or a guest, particularly if they are not logged in so that the name would be showing.

I can tell you that there are many more countries identified from flags showing that visit the site than there are for known flags of members normal location.

My main reason for starting this up, apart from the fact that I got hooked on 'Flag Spotting' (is there a name for that?), was to show that whilst the majority of member posters are from Native English speaking countries there are a condsiderable number of members and visitors who do not have English as their first language and we should be tolerant and helpful when they post. We should also be aware that whilst we sit and type from the comforts of our home we have no idea who will read what we put and what effect it may have on any person or event. [/face]

It is on both counts :) Most people will be more familiar with 'The Gambia' a popular holiday destination which is a country in its own right but completely surrounded by Senegal. Other than its seaward side that is.
