Hepzibah, warning signs were posted at Aussie, Egyptian and Qatari airports (and I know others around the world) at least as early as August last year when I travelled through them. It's because it was the defective one that was exploding, not for terrorism reasons.

Wrong, that may have been the case back in August, but now the reason is intelligence obtained in recent weeks found that an al Qaeda affiliate was perfecting techniques for hiding explosives in batteries and battery compartments of electronic devices, otherwise if it were just faulty batteries then why would the ban only apply in certain travel areas?

As far as I'm aware the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 Smartphone is still banned from airplanes (hold or cabin) because of the safety of its batteries.

Its dimensions would enable it to pass under the "terrorism" rules....but the safety issue overrides this.

This is my understanding of the posts by Hepzibah/WI.

The exploding batteries of some smart phones is a reason for them to be specifically banned, but the underlying reason for the ban is terrorism and not faulty batteries.

Of course.

But WI & Hepzibah were specifically referring to the the Samsung Galaxy 7...where terrorism isn't the issue....and never commented (as far as I can see) on the current general terrorism-related ban (which, of course, doesn't apply to the Samsung Galaxy 7)

Yes after re-reading Hepzi's post it does look as if they were only talking about the Samsung phone ban, :up but it is irrelevant now as the ban applies to all larger devices because of the terrorism threat which was the original point of this thread ;)

Not irrelevant...because on the size criteria, the Samsung Galaxy 7 would pass..

Moreover, many airports have now removed the notice about this particular phone as they feel, with all the publicity, people should know it's verboten.

I don't suppose many people still have and use them, following the recall.

Thank you newcastle. Exactly the point of my post. A particular brand was mentioned because of a particular dangerous problem at that time. Apart from already knowing why from widespread news stories, I heard another passenger ask the checkpoint official why.

I'm not going to search the DofT site to find the origin and date of the information. I don't have my laptop with me and I'm far too tired. I posted the information because it was very clearly stated on current KLM flight information. I have not seen this spelt out on other flight information that I have dealt with recently.

Smoking ban, bad behaviour by both-sides, Why ? 'simple lower standards, it alway's happens.
Nb: There are still 6 airlines that allow smoking.
And do people really need to tell all and sundry they just taking off

Who, you've reminded me of a time I was on a day coach trip to Belgium and there was a knowitall sitting in front of me who answered his mobile phone with the words "I'm out of the country at the moment." Although true, I thought the same words almost - pretentious prat!
