"Young Champions of the Earth aims to celebrate and support individuals between the ages of 18 and 30 who have outstanding potential to create positive environmental impact."

Garbage Music
As a passionate musician, designer and environmental activist, my dream is to bring together children working as garbage collectors in Luxor and teach them how to make their own musical instruments from trash and play music as a band. The project will empower children through the innovative use of waste, whilst using art and music as a medium to nurture relationships between communities, families and children. Furthermore, the project will promote waste recycling in the design and implementation of development projects to effect positive change in communities. We will provide free weekly classes to a stigmatized group of 70 children in Luxor who currently work as waste collectors. On self-made instruments, they will play together as the “Garbage Conservatoire Band” at various events in Egypt and beyond. Music will transform their lives and allow them to express themselves while fostering a sense of solidarity and community.

I'm not decrying this guys vision and attitude for a better Luxor, but to make musical instruments from garbage will only use a minuscule amount from the thousands of tonnes produced in this city each year. Also I have seen over the years very young boys sweeping the streets as a job. They need to be in better jobs than using a brush for the rest of their lives in all probability. I believe the wage for an adult sweeper is around nine hundred a month being expected to use equipment only fit for the rubbish skips. All the times I've seen these old, worn out and decrepit looking sweepers using one or two pieces of cardboard to scoop up the rubbish instead of a shovel. Disgraceful in this day and age. But you can not help the memory going back when certain expats that lived here when the clean up Luxors streets campaign was launched using them as so called ''roll modals,'' each and every one had brand new equipment for the photo shoots.

Children should not be working with garbage. Children should not work, but they do.

"This guy" is a creative musician, an artist and activist who, if any, can inspire and empower unfortunate children, make an impact, which is what this UN prize encourages.

Young Champions of the Earth

You want to change the world. We’re here to help. Young Champions of the Earth aims to celebrate and support individuals between the ages of 18 and 30 who have outstanding potential to create positive environmental impact.

In 2018, seven young people – selected from every global region – will be named Young Champions of the Earth. These winners receive seed funding, intensive training, and tailored mentorship to help them bring their big environmental ideas to life.

Whose big idea will change the world? Following an open call for applications, UN experts will short-list 35 Regional Finalists who will be subjected to an online public vote, informing the selection of 14 World Finalists. A Global Jury will then select the seven 2018 winners.

Each winner will be expected to implement their big idea and keep us updated on their progress by producing videos and blogs that we will share on our website.

In parallel, up to 50 of the most promising applicants will be granted privileged access to an expert community of Covestro mentors offering insights on topics ranging from communications and business development to project planning and financial management.

The Prize

What do the Young Champions receive?
In 2018, seven Young Champions of the Earth will be selected from each global region: one from each of Africa, Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean, North America and West Asia; and two from Asia and the Pacific. Each winner will receive the following:

US$15,000 in seed funding;
Attendance at a high-level UN meeting;
An introduction to dignitaries at the Champions of the Earth Award Ceremony;
Publicity and recognition through online and global media;
Access to a community of Covestro experts offering insights and mentoring; and
Participation in an entrepreneurial training program provided by The DO School.
The 2018 Young Champions will be required to share their implementation journeys through blogs and vlogs posted on this website for a period of up to one year.

Mentorship

More than just an honorary title, Young Champions of the Earth aims to nurture the next generation of environmental leaders.

Up to 50 applicants who clearly articulate their skills requirements and demonstrate a strong willingness to learn will be granted privileged access to an online mentoring programme. They will be able to seek technical guidance and professional advice from a broad community of experts drawn from Covestro’s 16,000 global staff members. These mentors will share their experience through webinars, thematic online roundtables and individual support. Topics of strategic relevance such as communications, project planning and financial management, will be explored in depth with the aim of strengthening the viability and impact of mentees’ ventures.

The engagement process between the mentees and Covestro will be facilitated by The Do School, an international platform fostering collaboration among leading corporations, experts and young talented individuals with the aim of encouraging innovation and making a positive social impact.

Are you ready to rise up?
If you have a bright vision for the future of our planet, perhaps you could become a Young Champion of the Earth!

And I think that you, me and the rest of the world that knows Egypt that a win here will not make one iota of a difference to anyone towards a short time change of attitude let alone a long term gain. Just look at Cairo and the family of generations of garbage collectors, [can't remember the name they are known by] countless hundreds well under the age of legal working hours/conditions. When it was announced that these people may loose their livelihoods when new proposed laws were implemented to give the work to firms, there was a public outcry demanding it be left as it is, mainly by the customers that had no problems with young kids doing their dirty work.

Thats them, I purchased a DVD a few years back on the lives of these people, and very interesting it was. The film makers took a few of them over to the UK, Manchester I think, to visit a waste disposal site. They couldn't believe their eyes when seeing what we Brits casually throw away each day. I have also watched an hour long documentary couple of years back on the church and surrounding district.

Have just voted for Shady, have known him for several years and heard about the excellent work he was doing on the West Bank when we were in Luxor earlier this year. Thank you Bente for highlighting this. :)
