Cancelled trip to Luxor

Post by donfletcher » Thu Aug 22, 2013 9:31 pm

Hello
My name is Don Fletcher. My wife Jean and I have been visiting Luxor for around 10 years now and since retiring we manage three or four trips each year.
We base ourselves at the Maritim Jolie Ville Hotel which we love.
We have made many friends over the years and are privileged to have been invited to many homes to meet families etc.
We were due to return on 25 September for three weeks but have today been notified that Easy Jet have now cancelled flights in line with other UK airlines and most of Europe.
Most of the reports we have had seem to suggest that Luxor has had few incidents but of course the UK government issue a blanket travel warning as they did two years ago
Although this is harsh for the Luxor people it is understandable from a safety point of view.
Nevertheless we are deeply disappointed and hopeful that the conflict can be resolved peacefully and soon.
Luxor deserves nothing less

Welcome to Luxor4U Don and Jean.

The cancellation of all Easyjet flights to Luxor has been quite a nightmare for many people, but at least they have now made a decision and people who have booked in advance are no longer hanging around wondering whether or not they will be flying. I know many are trying to make alternative arrangements by either flying in to Hurghada and then going by road to Luxor, or else booking with Egyptair direct into Luxor (when possible) or via Cairo. However, for many this will also depend on the FCO Advice and Insurance implications!

I hope you enjoy this site and look forward to reading your further posts.

Welcome Don and Jean, well there is one thing for certain you do stay at the best Hotel in Luxor, myself and wife stayed there many times over the 20 years has tourists before we made the move 4 years ago.

I cannot say for certain but I think this is a glitch in tourism for Luxor, mainly caused by the media and hyper inflated stories. The other way out is to fly to Hurghada and then across to Luxor, or Air Egypt from Heathrow to Cairo and on to Luxor people are doing both.

Believe me though Luxor is quiet at the moment, there are a few flare ups but nothing really worth bothering about. It like most of the smaller Cities in Egypt, but you do get used to Armoured Personnel Carriers on the Streets every now and then, they do not bother you though, they are there for protection.

But if you are like us, we never ventured away from Kings Island too much, we enjoyed the peace and quiet of it all and the staff, the inter action of the staff, ie Okashi shouting Coffee Teacake around the relaxing pool, failing to take a breath between Tea and Cake, or Nasmi floating about during the evening, he has got even thinner and can hide behind a spoon now. We spent our Anniversary at the Jolie Ville last Saturday it was brilliant, there were over 150 guests there.

Since the latest FOC advise is not to travel anywhere in Egypt, but to stay near your hotel, what are the insurance implications of travelling across the desert from Hurgada to Luxor?

The implications are that you could well end up finding yourself not covered. Some people have said their policies cover them as long as any claim is not as a direct result of the present situation (can't remember specific wording) but I'm not sure how that could or could not be proved in many situations. I'd certainly want to see any positive response saying I was covered to travel in writing from my insurers. Of course this really applies not just folks flying in to Hurghada and then travelling on to Luxor, but would also apply people flying direct into Luxor.

That's my understanding anyway.

I would certainly encourage anyone relying on being covered by insurance to check their policy out with their company for themselves. It may look it on the page - but 'one size does not fit all!'

Very hit and miss at the moment carrie. The bullet may hit you or it don't.

My plan was to join a french group in November, they cancelled their trip today...
The adventure was based on the work of the french mission at the Westbank but their work became also impossible so the officials stopped all archaeological activity till the end of the year...
They doesn't adviced to join any group actually, may individual trip could be safer but i didn't have the courage for starting alone...
I planned my last trip in November because the situation in my country became day by day harder and I think, after the 2014 elections i will be not able to plan anything more... just surviving, like now... the plane tickets are still in my hands...

Maybe the old Ramesses is thinking - it was enough to look at this dotty and he will not see me anyore...
