New Middle East Alliance Including Egypt and GCC States to Be Formed

MIRNA ABDULAAL
JANUARY 12, 2019

United States Secretary of State Mike Pompeo delivered a speech on Thursday in Cairo at the American University on America policy’s in the Middle East, noting that the Trump administration hopes to establish a coalition consisting of GCC states, Egypt and Jordan.

“The Trump Administration is also working to establish the Middle East Strategic Alliance – or ‘MESA’ to confront the region’s most serious threats, and bolster energy and economic cooperation. This effort is bringing together members of the Gulf Cooperation Council, as well as Egypt and Jordan. Today we ask those countries to take the next step in solidifying MESA,” Pompeo said in the speech.

Pompeo noted that the “the age of self-inflicted American shame is over” and that America will pursue a more activist policy, adding that it is a “force of good” for the region.

He added that the only way to end the rivalries and conflict in the region is by containing and defeating Iran, and vowed “expel every last Iranian boot” from Syria.

“For those who fret about the use of American power, remember this: America has always been, and always will be, a liberating force, not an occupying power. We’ve never dreamed of domination in the Middle East. Can you say the same about Iran?” Pompeo stated.

“The work to curb the regime’s deadly ambitions isn’t confined to the Middle East. America’s friends and partners from South Korea to Poland have joined our effort to stop Iran’s wave of regional destruction and global campaigns of terror.”

Pompeii’s speech was part of a nine-nation tour of the region aimed at assuring the leaders of the Arab states that the Trump administration is still taking an active role in the region amid confusion over the recent decision to withdraw US forces from Syria.

After the speech, he drove to the new administrative capital to visit two new places of a worship, the largest cathedral in the Middle East and a new grand mosque.

The speech was criticized for its lack of depth and clarity, as it merely narrowed down the conflicts in the region to be a result of Iran and the Obama administration.

It was also criticized for its contradiction with Trump’s recent decision to pull out US troops from Syria and his skepticism of American foreign engagement.

What a giggle - tried so many times even on insubstantial terms. They can't even get the Arab Union to function with the semblance of life.

My guess they will fight over power/superiority/functions and accountability and it will end with little. Its unions with Syria and Libya (not well known) ended quickly with few regrets on the other side and no attempt to renew.

I imagine the Egyptian approach will be to surrender a few things for $US40-60 billion following the deposit of which Egypt will return to its caterwauling.

Even on simple matters Egypt is a real problem to get co-operation from and most give up as in Iraq 1,2 and 3 (non attendance). It is one of the few countries in the world to have no military treaty/formal alliance, no substantial trade or investment treaty, no cultural treaty etc with any country.

The complicating factor is that Sisi promised 3 years ago 40,000 troops for a combined Arab army. Nothing happened. Its hinted that the Saudi's wanted control.

Jordan (no visits in 6 years) and Tunisia (no visits in 6 years) can't stand Egypt and the Sudan is an up and down relationship - at the moment down. The Gulfies are a mixed lot - as regards Egypt. Algeria (no visits n 6 years) and Morocco (no visits in 6 years) have little love for Egypt and have usually stayed out of Middle East matters. Libya is complicated by the fact that Sisi is helping a War Criminal War Lord Hafter, whose objective is to destroy the UN recognized government of Libya which is also recognized by the civilized world and recognized in the UN 4 years ago by Egypt following which it and Russia have broken their word. It was ever this. At this stage the UN recognized government loathes Sisi.

Sisi has visited Russia 4 times which shows that his priorities are 'global' or maybe just globular. The Russians have no cash.

Any alliance without Turkey would be a joke. They have the most powerful army and air force but are on the outer now and can't stand Egypt. Of all countries in the region Egypt's relationships are bad to awful and the Saudi relationship is hard to judge and those promised Saudi investments of 3 years ago never arrived. If the Egypt economy goes bad - 40% chance - the others - all of the others - will use that to extract concessions without an anesthetic.

Lebanon is a joke and its economy is very, very close to going belly up.
