Luxor has both Christian and Moslem communities and the politics of the Middle East are equally diverse. Air your views on the situation.

Teacher accused of insulting Morsi over 'sheep' question

Post by DJKeefy »

Egyptian teacher accused of insulting Morsi over 'sheep' question.

Ihab El-Islamboly, an English teacher in Alexandria, was questioned by police on Tuesday for setting a "politicised" exam question that "insulted" President Mohamed Morsi.

The question that angered some members of the Alexandria teachers' syndicate, which El-Islamboly says is dominated by the Muslim Brotherhood, included the quote, "In the animal kingdom, a sheep cannot be king."

El-Islamboly told Al-Ahram Arabic news website that he had not intended to insult the president, who hails from the Brotherhood, and the quote is part of the curriculum.

"What part of this quote has anything to do with the president or politics?" asked El-Islamboly.

Critics often accuse Muslim Brotherhood members of acting like sheep for slavishly following the orders of the group's supreme-guide.

On Saturday, the deputy education minister in Kafr El-Sheikh governorate ordered the punishment of an English teacher for including a question involving an imaginary dialogue between ousted president Hosni Mubarak and his successor Morsi.

Early last year, a teacher in the Nile Delta governorate of Sharqiya was penalised for setting an exam that included a question equating protesters with criminals and another requesting an essay congratulating the Muslim Brotherhood's Freedom and Justice Party for winning a majority in Egypt's first post-Mubarak parliamentary polls.

Wow - touchy touchy touchy with just that right amount of paranoid insanity to perpetuate all fanatics running to tell Big Brother who IS obviously watching extremely close. Close as in nobody in Egypt in the school system there has anything better to do than vet questions concerning sheep? Also bring to mind - "if the shoe fits......" (and be secure enough in yourself to wear it).

This type and level of scrutiny of coworkers and colleagues borders on the fanatical and leads to such high levels of paranoia, fear and worry in all aspects of everything that people essentially just freeze up. All initiative and thinking is lost as people, in this case teachers, become unwilling to take even a miniscule chance. Thinking out of the box totally ceases, innovation is lost and lets not even consider personal growth and development.

Given reactions such as these always create in the back of my mind the niggling thought - what is the fear? If you're total solid in your beliefs (political, religious, philosophical etc) you tend not to react totally over the top crazy if there is a joke or slight made. I'd say the majority of us can take the hit for what it is worth and laugh it off if something we hold near and dear is slighted. We might feel personally insulted but we don't go out and stone the nearest Embassy, burn flags and hang puppets in effigy. Seems there is a higher power or higher level of thinking that comes in to play and we can shrug off OR laugh with whomever is having one on us - but WOW ask a student a question related to sheep and suddenly you've got the MB breathing down your neck.......???????????? All I can say is WOW and slowly, sadly shake my head.

Its getting to be just like the schools in Japan used to be. Up to a few years ago, all references concerning Japans involvement in the war was banned as being part of the schools history lessons. References by teachers was strictly a no no topic with all books relating to the subject matter being heavily censored.
Life is your's to do with as you wish- do not let other's try to control it for you. Count Dusak- 1345.

I always think when reactions are this strong there has to be fear, uncertainty or something that is making you question the knowledge and facts you have.

If you know you really know you're solid and your knowledge is sound you don't have to react like a chicken running about the yard with its head cut off.

AND - doesn't GROWTH come from reflection and questioning? Wouldn't your understanding of the Prophet Mohamed be more vital and alive if you were able to gain in understanding of his life and times through active questioning and discussion without fear of repercussion suddenly striking you down dead like a bolt of lightening out of the sky OR the MB Office? How awful it must be to have to guess and then second guess and triple guess everything you do to make sure it is PURE and without any implication to anything that MIGHT be taken as an insult against Islam.

Save me from the stupidity of the short sighted and narrow minded
