Google Earth is a wonderful resource - for instance, we recently went to Gebelein, and on looking at the area afterwards, we found several tombs or tomblike objects that definitely seem worthwhile visiting. Google Earth uses a unique file format to collect sites - a KMZ file, and if anyone feels it worthwhile, I'll create such a file with more sites - including other pyramids or mysterious objects in other countries which they can download from my main website.

If you know roughly where they are located, and you have Place Names turned on, you will see the modern names appearing. I've just added Tanis to the list, and am searching for Quantir.

With the aid of other websites, I think I've found Pi-Rameses for you. Look around the area of my co-ordinates. Tanis, though, is clearly marked by Google Earth Communities, so I'm fairly sure of that.

I have just noticed that when you see a blue dot on a Google Earth map it indicated an image stored on Panoramio.com. There are many images to be viewed in the Luxor area :)
You can sign up and add your images to the database.

If you look at old (1800-1930 era) maps of the west bank, you will see that the water behind Ramla is in fact part of the Nile, and the Gezira-Ramla area was an island then. There were ferries from the island to the West Bank then.

Great stuff Stan. Only just got round to getting Google Earth and it's wonderful. Do you have the coordinates of that small Thoth temple you discovered a while back?

Yes I already did one, to show the extent of Qurna before the demolitions started, as the imagery on google earth dates from 2005.

I used it to make a map of the sites on the West Bank - http://www.eternalegypt.co.uk/luxor4u/westbank.jpg (4mb file)! Feel free to download it. I'll probably get some big prints done soon.
