A couple of anniversaries...

Post by LivinginLuxor »

This year we have two anniversaries of historical significance. The first is the 90th anniversary of Carter finding Tutankhamen's tomb on 5th November, and the second is the 100th anniversary of the discovery of the bust of Nefertiti by Borchardt on 6th December. The first really is without controversy as the vast majority of his grave goods are in the Egyptian Museum, but the controversy over Nefertiti still is ongoing. Did Borchardt hide its identity so he could get it back to Germany, and why did it take 12 years before it was first shown to the public? Maybe he thought that the distance in time would mean that she was forgotten!

Although Zahi made his claim to have Nefertiti returned a few years ago, within months of the bust being shown in Berlin, the Egyptian government made its first claim to getting Nefertiti returned. Al Ahram has a good article showing the steps the government has taken over the years to get her returned.

I might agree with you, but then we'd both be wrong!
