Stunning exhibition of extremely expensive modes of transport.
Bruce paid £1200 in 1965 for this Lotus Cortina last sold in 2014 for £150,000.
My Alpine Renault cost me new £2500 in 1969 todays price, over £40,000.

I'm intrigued be the "Getaway Car" logo.

Wouldn't you want, for a heist, something more reliable, less obvious.....and faster?

The "obvious" choice for a getaway car in those days was a Jag Mk2. The Lotus Cortina not so much.

That's right Barry it was always the Mk 2 Jaguar, loads of wood etc I had a 3.8 Dark Blue Mk2 but the S Type with the added boot on the back. A lot of the Lotus Cortina's still had the twin cam 1600cc engine in, which really only made it when it was put into the Mk 1 Escort. However a friend of mine in Lincoln had the ex Bent Solderstrom/Gunner Palm works Lotus Escort a much bigger engine and a flyer. Ford in the 60's did not have a reputation for reliability, and that was maybe why they were not used for get away cars. Which model of the Alpine did you have Dr, they were very few and far between, my brother in law still has one he takes it to classic car shows in fact we used to take our cars together. It was him and myself that built my aluminium bodied Le Mans, I got many trophies and awards for that. strangely enough my first classic or rather unusual car was a Mk 1 Escort, 1300 but I had it from new, I was a youngster at the time and thought cars needed no looking after, soon realised though how wrong I was, my cousin who was lead mechanic at Hartford Motors took it away for me to rebuild and did it from crash right off's.

When I got it back it had a Ford V6 hotted up engine, 14 inch width rims on the back and 12 inch on the front, all hidden under flared wheel arches, a Jaguar differential, updated brakes, heavier clutch and a respray to die for, He had copied an old Ford Anglia and sprayed it Peppermint Green with a Pink Twist down each side it looked great, I only kept it on the road for one year the insurance was too high I was 20 and the insurance was 260 a year, very expensive in them days. So got a trailer and started showing it at shows.

I was well into cars back then, now I could not care a damn about them, all I need now is something reliable that is cheap to run and comfortable. The Rav4 fits our bill its 4 door Turbo Diesel with a chipped engine for maximum economy around 58-60 miles per gallon. I use a tank of diesel every 6 weeks. Lynne's Honda Jazz, which she got last November and still on her second tank of petrol so that\s as cheap as chips to run. So you can tell how little interest I have in cars now. I am still anchoring for another Bike though, they have some great KTM's here.

Your friends Lotus Cortina must have been something special, Hagety's Insurance gives the average market value of a 65 Lotus Cortina. The one off the production line had a 1995cc straight four Twin overhead cam engine, did he have an Ex Works Jobbie, because hey can be priced out of the stratosphere...

The car wasn't that special other than being number 15 off the Lotus line and then being 'tweaked by Colin Chapman.
It was its' owner Bruce.....

Ps: Who's favorite getaway cars were always the Mk 2 Jag...

Are you talking Mr Biggs and his bunch of merry men Dr, if you are I presume this Bruce someone is connected. Its so long ago and distant I have forgotten who was who in the team. The last I heard was around 10 years ago one was selling flowers at a London Market.

Depends on if you are interested in crime or support these glorified thieves, if the train driver had passed within a year and a day the sentences would have been more severe.

Sometimes I wonder why the theft of money will bring a harsher sentence than killing a child! The train robbers sentences were unduly high, especially when you read that the killers of 'Baby P' were back walking the streets after just a couple of years! Is monetary loss more serious than murder? Does money mean more than human life? It obviously does, judging from the law courts sentencing!

Unfortunately the Law is an Ass and always has been.

I abhor violence and undoubtedly the train driver suffered an injury - but it was not the cause of his death.
