Interesting...
No, brilliant!
Slight problem...couldn't do a trace using TE Data landline.
Vodafone dongle...took slightly more than the 30 hops (so missed the last two!).
UK VPN...no probs at all.
There's actually an IPv6 version, but that's beyond the scope of this forum (but Google and YouTube are your friends)!

Thanks for the heads up, BM.

I'm Glad you liked it. :up It brightened my day up too when I found it.

Normally these traces are used to find out which Routers you pass through to get to a destination on the Internet. To see where the slowdowns are..
Generally they have boring or unmeaningful names, or just IP Addresses, such as the first 11 hops

Here is the full trace from my Console. It seems to have been recently updated as the relevant hop is now the 13th..

My Company name and first IP address changed or hidden for obvious reasons ! :cg

( God forbid that they find out Bullet Magnet is Me what I get up to all day)

No Choccy.. The organisation or individual has deliberatly set this up on thier routers, then posted the IP Address on the internet for entertainment purposes.

I wish I had thought of doing that though... :cg

Now, I do have some fun with setting up SSID's .. Wireless Internet Connection Names...

Especially when I get stoned..

I use Hotspot Shield, and it gives out a false IP address for privacy, the only thing is you cannot get onto some media sites.

Good to see you taking precautions Choccy.. :up

Regardless, everything you do on the Internet is monitored somewhere.. If you need advise on total anonimity and leave not a shred of "hard proof" or your activities, then drop me a line..

I have often said on here that a Router using NAT is one of the best defences for your protection on the Internet, and a decent Anti-Virus package for Windows Users.
That way you can browse to your heart's content...

Running Linux Mint 14.1 as I do at home, offers almost total protection, even if you don't have a router.
Its very secure and easy to use and setup. ( infact the hardest thing to do is decide on a decent password)
I dont know of one that has been damaged by a virus or spyware to date. No Anti virus or anti spayware packages needed.
Free is always best... :up

I got my friend onto it a couple of months ago, and during the installation, it even picked up her brand new wireless printer she didnt tell me about that was upstairs. It configured the software with no promting.
You will never ever need a driver disk, it is true Plug and Play. ALL for free, including Office Software and a whole host of free packages and utilities and games. You pay for Nothing..
Its good to donate to the foundation though, as a gesture of appreciation.
After an hour or so of using it, I guarantee you that you will NEVER use Windows again.. :cg

Hi BM,

That sounds brilliant! I am very fed up with Windows and, when I can afford it, I am planning on getting a new laptop and using a different OS. I love Open Source software, so it sounds like Linux would be just the ticket! Always best to follow an informed bod's advice. :up

I love tinkering with software so I'll probably be pestering you then, if I get stuck.

I wouldn't even bother getting a new Laptop KGB.. :cg Linux Mint will give it a new lease of life.

Go here http://www.linuxmint.com/download.php and downlaod the Installer file.
and I suggest the "Mate" 32 bit version for compatabilty purposes..

burn the ISO image as a proper DVD ( dont copy the ISO image to a DVD or it wont work)

Make sure you have all your files you want to keep backed up on some removeable media and then run the installer, either from Windows or boot up off the DVD.

When it asks about the hard drive partitioning, just go with the "use Entire Disk" option, (assuming you want to remeove Windows and all your files )
as the Linux file system is much faster than the NTFS file system of Windows.

That's it really. You seem to know your stuff with computers, and if you have installed Windows before then this will be a doddle.
The Installation can take a while, since it downloads updates during the install.

once it has installed and is running, you will be promted to connect to a wirelss network if you have one, just insert the password and you are done !

There's a handy guide on the website, but I will be happy to share the basics with you and you can take it from there.. :up

Dusak, I hope you were paying attention to all that.. I will be asking questions later... :cg

Thanks for that!! I'm going to wait for a new laptop but only because mine is now six and a half years old and I want more RAM, drive space, well, everything really. I may well revamp it with Linux anyway even when I have a new one - then I'll have a faster backup machine.
:)

(I won't forget your very kind offer though - you're way above my level of expertise!!) :tu:

And I assume that is you in your third incarnation Bullet Magnet. And my old machine is still ticking along fine, thanks to you for some help in one of your former guises. :) It did get in a mess a few weeks ago and I had to reboot to factory setting then rebuild everything but it now has a second life.

Nice to see you again too Grandad. :up

Yes, a Fresh installation of Windows always makes a difference on Windows machines.
Its because they have a registry file, and that file gets bloated after a while and just ONE incorrect entry can bring the whole machine down.

I think Windows 7 is the best incarnation of Windows so far :up ( and the now obsolete Windows 2000 )
I have managed 2 years without a rebuild, I think that is a new record for any Windows Machine I have ever owned.

Though I do dual boot it with UBUNTU, my favoured weapon of choice on the Internet... :cg

In a way, its only my second incarnation, as Keefy was good enough to rename my Zeitgeist profile. to save any confusion..
The Bill_H Profile is still on the Egypt4U, but I haven't been on there for a while, but I occasionally browse the open forums.
most of my posts on there went a bit Skewiff after Keefy upgraded all the '4U websites a while ago.. :urm:

See you again soon ? :up

Dusak, be careful you don't play with your Dongle too much.. :stp I have heard that they can drop off all together if you handle them too much, and you wont be able to insert it into any ports again.. :sd

Its this crap laptop that I bought here. The port I use for my dangling dongle went a bit skew whiff when I left it in overnight and one of the cats must of sat on it so now I have to wedge it up with a cig packet on the arm of the settee. Egyptian technology, fail safe. :up

I would consider the change to Linux IF I could be sure that the programs I use regularly would work on them - does it contain a Windows emulator that lets programs such as Photoshop, Dreamweaver and other web design software that I use work? Open Source programs like Open Office are excellent, but the Gimp has a terrible interface!
I might agree with you, but then we'd both be wrong!

HI Stan,

Yes there is a program called "Wine" that will run Installed Windows applications inside Linux.

I will get back to you to see if it will run something as powerful as Photoshop..
A quick Google search brought this up..
http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/idiots-gui ... untu-1004/

(Ubuntu and Mint are DEBIAN based versions of Linux )

You will of course need to Install Linux on a separate partition on the computer that you have Windows installed on. But dont worry about that, as the Linux installer takes care of all that. :up

As you have already discovered, Open Office or Libre Office are free for both Windows and Linux and have always in recent years been supplied with the Linux distributions and install themself as part of the installation.

With Windows, you have to install it, then use all the driver disks to get all your hardware working properly, THEN install all your applications and that can take several hours !!

With UBUNTU and MINT et al, you install it and all the hardware and software packages are installed for you automatically. Then you can use the package manager and select more software to install from the thousands of different FREE software packages.
There could well be a non commercial Photoshop equivilant out there ?

APPLE uses a version of Linux, and all APPLE do is tweak the desktop interface before selling it to you for a small fortune.
I see it like Bottled Water being sold in the UK and the West.. :urm: If you catch my drift... ;)

Linux is a learning curve, but the basics can be mastered in a few hours, and there is loads of practical and truthful information out there for Linux users, and "newbies" are ALWAYS welcome into the fold... :int: . . ( There is also some important life lessons there.. )

Anyhow, I must go, my mate is coming round to do a proper job of valeting my car inside and out. This will take him about 5 hours to do, he is a professional with all the kit..
In return, I will spend a few hours sorting out his wifes computer so it is running properly again..

Lasting Friendship's and money seldom mix... :cg
And why involve the governments taxman when we can both help each other out ? :up

Thats why I wonder about the logic behind people who get married.. :stp

"Babe, I love you so much that I think we should tell the government all about it and get married".... :ks
