Gezira Garden Hotel

Post by hatusu » Mon Jan 14, 2013 7:20 pm

I went for a drink in the restaurant with 2 friends but when it came to pay the bill we were shocked to find that a glass of wine is double the price of anywhere else round about. On being questioned the Assistant Manager was extremely rude and amongst other things said it was because they were the best hotel. Not when it comes to Customer Relations theyre not!!

You're right Dusak - if you're not eating though you dont usually ask for the menu, you just order your drinks, but Ive learnt my lesson for the future. But I couldnt understand why the beer was a notrmal price but the wine was way over the top. However, its not particularly the price of the drink Im complaining about (although it was comparable with a 5* hotel) it was the attitude of the man Im complaining about. Ive always found the owner there perfectlly civil and friendly, there is absolutely no reason why this man shouldnt have been as well.

I had to learn the hard way concerning this. Many years ago myself and three mates went on one of the cheap three day mini cruses over to Hamburg. Had a good time until we stopped off at a bar for our anniversary 1000th drink. My three mates went down into the club while I was up top phoning my girl friend telling her how boring and nothing happening the trip had turned out to be. (those where the days, when you could get away with murder) Anyway I joined my mates in a very dark, dingy and empty club. There was a topless go-go dancer on stage suffering from a great deal of sag, but at least they swayed in time with the music. Within moments of sitting an older, but very attractive woman sat next to me and asked would I like to buy her a drink. Well, me being a perfect gentleman agreed and asked what she would like. She had a white wine and asked would I like to go into the 'private' room to enjoy it. Have to admit that I chickened out and declined the offer. We finished the drinks and asked for the bill. I can't remember the local currency total, but I will never forget the Stirling amount. One of my mates had a fresh orange-cost 10 Stirling- two had a bottle of beer each-40Stirling the two. My beer and her wine 75Stirling. We could not pay this amount as we were due to get the boat back in a couple of hours and had spent up. We threw what money we had on the counter and said that was the lot, take it ore leave it. They refused our offer, they being the barman who was about sixty, the flusey that had attached herself to me and another man that was built like the proverbial brick **** house. A fisticuffs started with the four of us scampering up the stairs into the street just as a black Merc screeched to a halt spewing out four bruisers. The four of us broke all Olympic records doing the one kilometer escape dash to the boat. Oh happy days.

I remember staying here 1 night, got the cheapest A/C in Luxor, big cracks down the walls where mossies fly in and attack you. Spent 30 minutes stargazing through the crack, think this must be also its star rating. Asked for food once and they came back with two cups of coffee, dare not swim in the pool at the time it looked milky and cloudy. Looked at the breakfast then went around the corner for something substantial.

I attempted to stargaze through the crack once but ended up with a bad back.

I found this website which gives their prices for accommodation and drinks: http://www.el-gezira.com/E/prices.htm but I'm a bit confused as there seem to be 2 lots of prices.

Is one place called the Gezira Hotel and another the Gezira Garden?

The food and beverage manager of the Jolly Vile once told us that his hotel was the best in Luxor, while we were actually busy complaining to him about some uncooked chicken which his staff had served to our little grandson!

We usually have at least one meal at Gezira when I'm over but when we last ate there in Oct the bill was almost double. Their standard doesn't justify the increase and so they've now lost 2 more customers. :td
Have loving acceptance of all that is.......

Hatusa

Gezira is just behind your hotel - maybe 100 yards away. It has basic amenities.

Gezira Gardens is the one with the courtyard pool. It has the restaurant on the roof that always seems to be enclosed (unlike NVH). They have very loud music on special occasions. I know because I have walked out when you were there a couple of years ago.
