Some weeks ago the idea of rounding up stray dogs and cats and exporting them was mooted....the destination being countries like Korea where they are regularly eaten.
A leading Egyptian MP has suggested that Egypt export stray dogs for meat consumption to countries like South Korea as a solution to the problem of overpopulation of stray dogs in the country.
The deputy of the human rights committee in parliament, Margaret Azer, told Ahram Online on Tuesday in a phone call that her suggestion is an alternative to “shooting dogs dead or castrating them.”
“We could collect the stray dogs and place them in a farm where they would be put on a special diet for proper nutrition and then slaughtered and exported,” Azer said.
Azer first made the suggestion in statements to the privately owned newspaper Youm 7 in response to a question on how to deal with the problem of stray dogs.
Azer said the idea of exporting the animals for consumption was made after “discussion with a few South Koreans.”
“This would be an investment for Egypt,” the MP said, adding that she has not yet decided if she will introduce a bill in parliament on the matter.

Unsurprisingly , there was an immediate furore on social media, both here and abroad, with calls for tourists to boycott a country with such a barbaric attitude to animal welfare.
Well, it seems that a bill was introduced and passed and the first shipload of some 4000 animals will shortly be on its way.
A high-level source inside the Ministry of Agriculture revealed that The General Organization for Veterinary Services has approved of the export of 4,100 dogs and cats, reports Al Masry El Youm.
The sources detailed that the shipment includes 2,400 cats and 1,700 dogs of different breeds, and they have been undergoing medical tests and vaccination throughout October and September.
Hamed Abdeldayem, the official spokesperson for the Ministry of Agriculture phoned in on talk show Ra2y 3am (Public Opinion) on Wednesday, disclaiming that there are no international laws or treaties against the export of cats and dogs, adding that this is the first time Egypt would do that.
Abdeldayem also communicated that exporters often do not specify the countries they are exporting to, and this is indeed the case for this shipment whose destination is as of yet obscure.
It is noted that in early October, Member of Parliament Margaret Azaar had proposed that Egypt should solve its stray dog problem by exporting the animals to countries that consume them for food. "After being properly nurtured, a dog could be exported for like 5 pounds each." Azaar had argued that they would be “as valuable as sheep here.”
No further has been revealed by the spokesperson.
