Drugs put Egypt’s future at risk

Post by DJKeefy »

Egypt’s future is being put at risk because such a large proportion of the population is doing drugs.

Egypt’s Minister of Social Solidarity Ghada Wali said early this year that the rate of drug taking in Egypt has reached 10 percent (9.6 million people), a number which has been increasing since the last 1980’s and increased dramatically after the uprising of 2011 which weakened state control.

Drug addiction is particularly high among the population aged under 35, and a report last year found nearly 8 percent of Egyptian high school students abused drugs.

Amr Othman, head of the Egyptian Center for the Prevention and Treatment of Addiction, told Arab News:

“The percentage of people in Egypt that are under 35 make up around 40 percent of the population. If such a huge number of them are addicted, this means the future of Egypt is in danger,”

Egypt’s population includes approximately 34 million people aged between ten and thirty, creating a big market for drugs and attracting the interest of cartels.

According to Arab News, many university students have a casual attitude towards their drug use, with cocaine and MDMA (a psychoactive drug) popular choices to stave off boredom on the weekend. However, the most commonly abused drug is the prescription-only painkiller tramadol, followed by cannabis and heroin. Apparently many bus and taxi drivers depend on tramadol to stay awake on the road.

The country is currently attempting to stem the tide of drug use with various media, school and university campaigns. It is also attempting to cut off supply, though this is difficult because the country has multiple international entry points and is in the middle of the some of the main global trafficking routes.

The government is also making an effort to provide rehabilitation services to addicts, such as the Center for the Treatment of Addiction. Its vision is to have an addiction treatment center in each governorate, and free treatment for patients to help them recover. More people are seeking help from such centers due to the rising cost of the commonly used tramadol. However, some fair worse is yet to come if such users switch to stronger drugs such as heroin instead.

I think a compulsory daily dose of Columbian marching powder would do wonders for the efficiency of much of Egypt's bureaucracy, :a80:

The main issues are cannabis and opioids...accounting for 80% of the "drug problem"

The latter is being tackled with the restriction on ease of prescription.

I don't advocate the Western trend of decriminalisation of cannabis....too many idle Egyptian youth as it is....but I wish someone could disabuse the average Egyptian of the notion that it enhances their driving skills!

Fortunately, cocaine, or it's derivative 'crack', is simply too expensive to be a problem for other than the richest of Cairo's elite.

P.S. Did you know it's illegal for an Egyptian under the age of 16 to purchase or consume tobacco or alcohol? Ha!!

Its a story few will believe - least on a forum which avoids longer term fact based complex arguments which try to explain current problems.

There was a time, not now, when Egypt lead the international world in stopping the trafficking and taking of drugs. Shock horror.

Pasha Russell (head of the Cairo Police) led the world in this matter in the 20's, 30's and 40's - but as a white man, 'viscous', imperialist. trash was asked to leave.

Oddly for Egypt he ran a non corrupt police force. Very oddly for Egypt the world recognized his skills and got him to lead the first international effort during the time the League of Nations. He loved Egypt and was noted for his positive treatment or ordinary staff.

There are absolutely no records or remembrances of him in Egypt which is a good thing for current non-performing administrators/cops. No one in Egypt wants to be humiliated by past people who just did an excellent job.

Since 1952 Egypt is hugely better in all possible ways. I'm sure all will agree that the expulsion of the English has only given ordinary Egyptians chances no one would otherwise have given them - including in the police. It is always the case to adopt a 100% rule with no exceptions as perfected by Joseph Stalin. Everyone out - particularly those doing a good job - the third rate World Bank staff are marvelous because they always agree with us. Its an policy the Guardian fully endorses as a way of acquitting ourselves of guilt.

In a Nasser military, socialist, anti-imperialist system people with no skills should be given great power - providing they have a uniform. What could be clearer.

(Russell was a remarkable man not well studied and proved that you could run a clean and effective system in a chaotic society - pity no one followed him. If the UK could have produced a thousand Russells the world would have been better. There are good reasons why he is not remembered in Egypt).

The Egyptian police is now a minimum of one million - 1 for 90 of the general population and within the drug taking demographic 1 for 30. They are no more or less effective than the other 30 Ministerial portfolios - but are under infallible military management. Can they get any better?

A problem for them, now forgotten and censored out of all records, is that in the 2011 'events' it was the police animal brutality that was singled out. It would be unfair to assume they were all out of control wild animals but one does wonder whether there are intelligent and strategic cops capable of dealing with drugs with other than a fist. Maybe there are.

A bizarre side comment. The Brits faced major nationalist/terrorist problems from the early 20's. They never created a bloated police force or used killing or torture to maintain their power. People like Russell used judgement, intelligence and tactics to stabilize the situation - never to liquidate or exterminate it. How times have changed and the intelligence of leaders dropped further than infinity. The police also now take money - from everyone. I know imperialism is the 'most evil event in the history of the world' (NO) but what has followed is no better and probably a lot worse.

In simple terms one million cops (the President called them 'a million man mafia" which is odd but revealing of the morals of the police) should be able to control drugs - if they can't hundreds of senior officers should loose their jobs and a new strategy adopted. Simple.

So my long winded words are this:

Egypt was once superb in controlling the drug problem. What has happened to put it in the trash category? Are there other areas where Egypt has dramatically dropped? Are there any areas where Egypt has dramatically improved?
