Drugs
A British woman has been arrested and charged with drug smuggling for bringing tramadol into Egypt, allegedly for her husband who has a bad back. The FCO issued a warning not long ago against this and since she says she comes to see him 3 or 4 times a year, how bad is his back that he needs 300+ tramadol? Don't think she'll be bringing them again. Hope she gets out of the calaboose soon but apparently could be facing up to 25 years.

Re: Drugs
300+ is not much if you are taking 2 every 4 hours per day, even at just 12 hours worth (6 tablets a day) that would work out about 2 months supply.carrie wrote:A British woman has been arrested and charged with drug smuggling for bringing tramadol into Egypt, allegedly for her husband who has a bad back. Re: Drugs
I would be more curious as to where she got them from, can you actually buy such an amount over the counter?

Re: Drugs
She should of kept a few back for herself, she will need them once they start using the cattle prod. Silly woman, I would of thought that they would of been found at the point of exit before arriving in this country.

Re: Drugs
Tramadol, and other opioid based painkillers are banned in Turkey too. I'm not sure what the penalty would be for bringing them in, but I guess it would be similar to Egypt. Her husband must have known the tablets were illegal, even if she didn't, so there's no excuse. Sounds to me like she's had the wool pulled over her eyes.

Tramadol can not be bought over the counter, prescription only.Horus wrote:I would be more curious as to where she got them from, can you actually buy such an amount over the counter?
A doctor will only prescribe a box of 100 tablets at a time, they are not available for repeat prescription, each prescription MUST be signed off by the G.P. Years ago each tablet contained 100 m.g. In most cases these days G.P.s will only prescribe at the rate of 50 m.g. per tablet.
These drug are highly addictive.
In this modern day, when travelling abroad, especially the East and Middle East a doctors note should accompany such drugs.

Re: Drugs
That was my thoughts, so her obtaining these drugs in the UK with her husband being in Egypt does raise a few questions.A-Four wrote:Tramadol can not be bought over the counter, prescription only.Horus wrote:I would be more curious as to where she got them from, can you actually buy such an amount over the counter?

Re: Drugs
The woman may have obtained them over the counter in Spain and flown directly from there to Egypt. She might be British, but could be a frequent visitor or resident in Spain.
I gave the pharmacist in Ibiza my UK prescription for Tramadol and was told I didn't need a prescription and how many would I like?

Re: Drugs
It just goes to show MD that different places have different rules, my impression (maybe wrongly) was that she came from the UK.

Re: Drugs
Apparently she watches Emmerdale every night.
Presumably the tramadol was prescribed to enable her to cope with the trauma.

Re: Drugs
It looks like she was from the UK and visits her Egyptian husband up to 4 times per year. So no doubt our own NHS service was being abused in more ways than one, I have no sympathy whatsoever for her plight.

Re: Drugs
The British press have got hold of the story. This won't help tourism if clients think they'll face the death penalty for bring in a few pain killers. Ironically you can buy 800mg of ibuprofen in single form when you would need a prescription back in the UK.

Egypt isn't the only country that prohibits the import of certain medications and the rules are quite clear. I can't imagine many people who read the article will be too worried for themselves. ...or worried about this woman who has been very stupid.
And she won't be facing any death penalty.

Re: Drugs
You know that, I know that but sadly the average holiday maker will believe the tabloid press, which is one of the factors that started Egypt's tourism problems in the first place. You only have to read the stupid comments that stupid people make in the comments section. Are even Daily Mail readers that thick?

However it does beggar belief why her husband didn't inform her about these drugs in the first place before flying out.

Re: Drugs
It would have been a strange conversation.
"Bring me 300 Tramadol dear. Oh, by the way, if you're caught with them you'll be arrested as they cannot be legally imported."
Or perhaps he thought bringing in a drug more or less banned in Egypt would be ok........and, if not, it wouldn't be his problem.

Re: Drugs
I think co codamol (codine) is banned in Egypt but I knew many who travelled with it, A lot of the time I think its just a case of not knowing.
Is there some law stating its illegal to take cotton into Egypt?
They do seem be be showing the tourists and ex-pats in the last few years that the Mubarak days are well and truly over.

Re: Drugs
Why is that whenever something like this happens there is a chorus of '...won't help tourism'? Excuse me while I
Every country has rules about what you can and cannot take in, and when it comes to drugs it is usually outlined that certain medications, if allowed into the particular country, have to have a copy of the prescription and/or a doctor's letter/certificate with them as proof. There may still also be a limit on quantity. If they are allowed in to a particular country it is for personal use anyway.
If Tramadol is not available over the counter in the UK, and I don't believe it is, the it has been gained either by the woman getting it on personal prescription, or possibly over the internet. If by personal prescription than giving it to anyone else is a) illegal and b) potentially highly dangerous. Obtaining drugs by personal prescription for the use of others is also fraud in the UK. So, this woman has not only broken the law in Egypt, but potentially also in the UK. Execution or even a long prison sentence is more than extreme, but this woman certainly needs the book throwing at her.

If not and you do mean cotton, there probably is a law regarding raw cotton (as in the the plant and seeds) as it's a national crop. It would be important to keep out diseases that could effect the crop.

Re: Drugs
I do not think for one second that this case will affect tourism or Egypt for that matter.
Your confusing this lady with the one that recently relocated to Cyprus with her husband me thinks, one item off a very long list of fun times anew.newcastle wrote:Apparently she watches Emmerdale every night.
