Pylons

Post by carrie »

Going to and from Hurghada through the desert there are numerous pylons, some are big and some smaller, all have cables or wires connecting each to the other. There are also what looks like pylons, much bigger that the others, no cables and what appears to be solar panels at the base. More often than not they have a small encampment near the base of nomads with their goats. Has anyone any idea what these tower things are? I did ask on the bus but no one seemed to have noticed them before but they are not new been there yonks.

Telephone lines run through the desert but don't seem to be connected in any way to these towers, they have no dishes on them as have mobile phone masts and like I say these little encampments at the base, wonder if they have anything to do with water?

They are telecomms masts. As you noticed they are now all solar powered and microwave connected. Some are undoubtedly government/military comms but others are mobile phone networks.

And the little huts at their bases are the families who clean and look after the solar panels
and to make sure someone like me doesn't decide to convert his whole house to Eco friendly energy.

Having said that I'm relaxing for a few days in fairly Eco friendly El Gouna drinking a 'desperados @ 1130hrs,
before the drive across the desert road wondering about solar power.... 8)

Ps: Tonight, I will be sampling some of the best burgers that ever passed my lips at....

Pss: It is a shame MT never discovered this place 66 restaurants,
and fun for all the family and loads of really 'crap live music...
