Egyptian Football Terror Suspect

Post by Hafiz »

Egypt’s greatest football player has been placed on the terror list and can’t travel.

This follows the freezing of his assets in 2015.

Mohamed Aboutrika formerly of the al-Ahly club and 2000 African footballer of the year was a public supporter at some time in the past of the then Morsi government.

In 2015 The Guardian reported that he had ceased making public political statements from 2012 and it published the claim that a travel firm of which he was co-owner had been implicated in funding the beards/terrorism. At that time he denied involvement in his business partners alleged actions and claimed he had severed business ties well prior to 2015. https://www.theguardian.com/football/20 ... rotherhood

He is yet to be charged with any offence two years after having his assets frozen. Bit hard to prove your innocence if you've never been charged.

Al Ahram is a bit slow off the mark in reporting this but the BBC is reporting from Cairo that the street is treating this story with less than a straight face.

The temptations of over-reach.

Meanwhile the Mubarak boys swan around Cairo in their Brioni suits and Mercs. and travel where they want. https://egyptianchronicles.blogspot.com ... egypt.html

Football is a well regulated activity in Egypt with all types of controls. For example, The Huffington Post reported a few months ago that crowds attending Egyptian soccer matches have been banned for most of the past five years for security reasons. Is this true? If true must create cash flow problems.

It's true alright...the regime remains terrified of large gatherings of rowdy youths. A few are allowed in, at the discretion of the security forces, with individuals vetted

Presumably the clubs survive on TV rights, advertising etc.

Instead of congregating in the stadia, locked-out fans gather in nearby coffee shops to watch matches on TV.

So....someone benefits :)

They may have bitten off more than they can chew with the persecution of Aboutrika. He is immensely popular in this football-mad nation and repected for his generosity to the under-privileged. There could be serious repercussions if they tried to indict him .
