Corruption is so a part of many Egyptians life you will never get rid of it. The problem is it's covered up by the words "Backshesh"

Bennu - thank you.

Its a UK bit of propaganda which finishes with the King and Queen of Egypt on Malta. Wonder why they ended up on Malt?. Which were the UK backing? If you were backing the alcoholic and gaming addicted king why would you expect Egypt to be your friend? Maybe the policy was to back all monarchies? What could be wrong with that?

I think I am right in saying that the current consensus is that Naguib was a good man (and not corrupt) with no viscous anti-western motives nor any particular anti Jewish, Armenian, Lebanese, Greek, French, English etc interests in mind. We will never know. He was soon overtaken by the more charismatic and ideological Nassr and the rest is history - including the decline of the Egyptian economy against all the other world economies and the mass expulsions of all non Egyptians. Not unconnected events.

I think its also true to say that Nassrs drug was not money but power. Later ones have wanted the money. His sister used to be seen around Cairo in the last decade or so and I don't think she was rich. Paradox.

As no one has mentioned - including the Egyptian media - its the 60th anniversary of the 'nationalization' of the canal which was entirely Nassr and his hysterical approach to garnering Egyptian opinion. Another post.

It was the island of Capri!

In 1952, Nassar let a successful coup, and Farouk was forced to abdicate. He was seen as a hypocrite, when he took numerous crates of Champagne and Scotch with him, although, as a Muslim, he wasn’t supposed to drink alcohol. The crates, however, were packed with gold bars and represented the bulk of the fortune Farouk was able to smuggle out of Egypt with him ... Farouk settled in Italy with his wife and children. A typical evening for Farouk would begin with an exclusive dinner, followed by high-staked card games. Afterwards, he would watch a floor show in a nightclub.
