Elections in Upper Egypt

Post by Glyphdoctor »

Not about Luxor, but a good piece nonetheless, as normally journalists don't report much on elections beyond Cairo or Alex and this reporter clearly took his time to understand things in depth:

An interesting read.

The portrayal of Upper Egypt as a patriachal society dominated essentially by a relatively small number of family/tribal elders came as no surprise.

I was left wondering what relevance democracy has in the sense we would recognise, say, in UK or what influence elected members really have in the current parliament.

As far as I can see, Egypt is governed, as it has been for decades, by an uneasy alliance of a plutocracy and the military neither of whom appear to have much interest in the welfare of the inhabitants of Upper Egypt .
