Egypt begins close monitoring of online communication

Post by DJKeefy »

Egypt begins close monitoring of online communication with new technology.

Egypt has contacted a sister company of a US-based online security firm to monitor the country's cyber communications a few months after authorities unveiled a new campaign to keep social networking sites under surveillance.

See Egypt, the sister company of US-based Blue Coat, has already started monitoring Egypt's online communications, according to BuzzFeed News which spoke with several Egyptian officials.

The company, which an anonymous official told BuzzFeed is close to the country's security apparatus, has planned to provide authorities with a technology called the Deep Packet Inspection which offers rigorous scrutiny by allowing tracking and providing statistical information.

“Our job as a company is to give them the system. I train the government on how to run it and we give them the program,” Ali Miniesy, the CEO of See Egypt, told BuzzFeed

Miniesy said the program, similar to other systems used by western authorities including the US, can be used to "to penetrate WhatsApp, Viber, Skype, or other programs if needed."

Egypt’s interior ministry announced earlier in June it would implement a social media surveillance programme to track security threats such as terrorism—sparking ire on social media and among rights groups

Dismissing fear of a cyber-crackdown, the government said the controversial measure would operate in line with the law, stressing that private accounts will only be accessed upon a court order and that surveillance will only include public media.

The interior ministry was infamous for spying on citizens under deposed president Hosni Mubarak to quash political dissent and observers say the new campaign is meant to scale up practices already in use by the security apparatus

Authorities have arrested several suspects charged with inciting violence against police and army, the target of a mounting Islamist insurgency, in recent months.

So, the Government will spend money protecting themselves ( under the 'giuse of National Security ), but cut subsidies for Fuel and increase electricity costs by 20%
:tk

In July the government took a much-dreaded and delayed decision to lift subsidies on fuel products by up to 80 percent and to increase the price of electricity by 20 percent.

Interior Ministry denies monitoring Internet activity.

The media center of the Ministry of Interior denied news circulated by a number of websites on Thursday about a contract between the Ministry of the Interior and a company to monitor Internet activities and social networking websites in Egypt.

"This news is completely false," the center added in a statement, Al-Masry Al-Youm reports.

The statement appealed to the media to check with the ministry before circulating such news, especially during the current stage where Egypt is facing challenges that aim to shake people's trust in the Interior Ministry, according to the statement.

The online publication BuzzFeed reported the story earlier, having spoken to an anonymous Interior Ministry official as well as the Ali Miniesy, the CEO of See Egypt, the Internet security company who contracted with the government to provide the online tracking services, similar to those in Western countries.

See Egypt's program can sift through large amounts of data from Facebook, Twitter, email accounts and other online information to identify any individuals as potential threats to the government. “The program, the training we give, can also be used to penetrate WhatsApp, Viber, Skype, or other programs if needed,” Miniesy told BuzzFeed.

The Interior Ministry had made previous statements it was monitoring the Internet, but assured the public it had no need to fear the monitoring. “Who says we are monitoring your private life? We are monitoring political issues, we need to watch electronic crimes,” said Gen. Hany Abd el Lateef, spokesman for the ministry.

In previous statements, the Interior Ministry has already made clear they plan to track down Islamists, homosexuals and any others who do not reflect the Egyptian mainstream societal views. The ministry has released a more detailed list of offenses they plan to monitor on social media websites:

Blasphemy and skepticism in religions; regional, religious, racial, and class divisions; spreading of rumors and intentional twisting of facts; throwing accusations; libel; sarcasm; using inappropriate words; calling for the departure of societal pillars; encouraging extremism, violence and dissent; inviting demonstrations, sit-ins and illegal strikes; pornography, looseness, and lack of morality; educating methods of making explosives and assault, chaos and riot tactics; calling for normalizing relations with enemies and circumventing the state’s strategy in this regard; fishing for honest mistakes, hunting flesh; taking statements out of context; and spreading hoaxes and claims of miracles.

Tolerant lot.
Lets see where I fall short...

Religious Skepticism: Check
Sarcasm: Check
calling for the departure of societal pillars: Check
pornography, looseness, and lack of morality, that depends on ones point of view, so better: Check that one too.
Calling for normalizing relations with enemies, if you mean Peace then better: Check that one as well.
using inappropriate words: :urm: Check..

I'll just sit in a corner, leave it all to Government and be a good boy... :br

I think the "calling for the departure of societal figures" embargo might cramp the voice of opposition somewhat ;)

The Egyptians just need to ask the Americans for copies of what they're tracking cause they're listening to everybody everywhere already. Why bother to set up your own system when there is one already in place!
