First day of constitution vote. (14th Jan 2014)

Post by DJKeefy »

Voters turned out across Egypt on Tuesday for the first day of a nationwide constitutional referendum. The newly-amended charter, widely expected to replace the previous one from 2012, which had been drafted under ousted Islamist president Mohamed Morsi, has been billed as the first step in a post-June 30 political roadmap towards future presidential and parliamentary elections.

Polling stations have been largely calm and orderly, with the exception of an early morning bomb blast at a station in the northwestern Cairo district of Imbaba, in which no injuries were reported. Five pro-Muslim Brotherhood supporters have died so far in clashes with security forces, four in the Upper Egyptian governorates of Sohag and Beni Suef, and one in the Giza district of Cairo.

Voting commences on the referendum Wednesday evening. Egyptians living abroad cast their ballots earlier this week, nearly unanimous in a vote of "yes."

Most polling places are male or female only. Even when they have both, they line up separately.
