Chairman of the Eastern Tobacco Company Mohamed Osman Haroun announced that as of Thursday, prices for all types of cigarettes will increase at a minimum of LE1.5 per pack.

The new increase is under a law approved by the House of Representatives No. 2 of 2018.

In a telephone call to the “Yahdoth Fi Misr” (Happening in Egypt) program on MBC Masr, Haroun said that 50 percent of the value of the new increase will fund the new comprehensive health insurance system, and the other 50 percent will go for the Taxes Authority.

The price of Cleopatra Box cigarettes would rise to LE17 per pack instead of LE15.5, while price of the regular Cleopatra cigarettes would be LE16 instead of LE14.5, said Haroun, adding that the Cleopatra cigarettes are the cheapest in Egypt.

The price of Marlboro Black Label cigarettes will be sold at LE22, instead of LE19, he also said.

That's quite a bit for locals, but suppose for ex pats nothing, a box of LM Blue 100's here are 3.80 Euros. But they are real and not fake! If they are going to have medical insurance, to pay for the new comprehensive insurance cover then why put money from ciggies in. could it just be to get the system going and once going, they bring the tax down again? don't think so!

If you want to raise money for health care then taxing smokers is an obvious and unobjectionable course.

Smoking is a voluntary and health-destroying habit and Egyptian smokers, like their bretheren worldwide, probably contribute excessively to the numbers requiring medical help.

Cyprus is not a full member of the EU its membership is similar to Norway Dr. On saying that I dare say the new multi-million dollar Marina at Potima Bay has had a bit of funding from them, as with the wine producing farmers, and the many village squares that have been updated. I am afraid I am not a lover of the EU at all, unelected bureaucrats, pretending they know everything, and a weak UK leader letting them walk all over her.
I don't know if the new updated UK Forces base in Cyprus has also had some EU cash but expect so!
I should not grumble though about other Countries bleeding pots for cash, should I!!!!!

Cyprus is a FULL member of the EU with the euro as its currency.

The EU rules are suspended as far as the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus is concerned.....pending reunification

Maybe it'll take a few more years for MT to comprehend fully the status etc. of his new homeland :ct
