A thousand Splendid Suns- Khaled Hosseini

Post by Aromagician »

This was a great book. Written by a writer from Afghanistan, to highlight the events and struggles of the people there.

Starting with the life of a girl who is born as a "harami" a ******* daughter to wealthy landowner and his housekeeper, and the life she leads.
It is heartwrenching. A story of trial and of survival. I was hooked as soon as I started reading it I couldnt put it down,
She gets married off to a 44 year old man when she is 14 years old ( or was it 15?) when her mother commits suicide. Sent to another city along way from everything and everyone she has ever known.

Anyhow. Good reading, not sure if the blokes would enjoy it, might need the tissues girls.
He is a great writer, I was astounded a male had written it as it was in the main about the female survival in times of war. From the occupation of the russians, to the fighting of the warlords, the takeover of the Taleban, etc etc.

Regards

Enjoyed the book before seeing the film......book was much better for me.

The other one, I began, but didn't finish. As Aro infers, it is possibly a "woman's book", but agree he writes well!!

Both are great books that, through fiction describe the life in Afganistan. Has anyone read Breadwinner, it is a childs book but a similar fictional account of that country

[face=Comic Sans MS]I read The Kite Runner when it first came out, and A Thousand Splendid Suns is still on my 'To Read' list.

When I had read The Kite Runner I was curious to know more about the author and what had prompted him to write it. I was in a way pleased to see that he knew his characters well as they were all taken from his own life. The Khaled Hosseni website has undergone quite an update, and for me, the written information is not so informative. There is now a video taped section with Hosseni's comments and answers to questions that have been raised by readers. (Unfortunately the sound tape is not working well for me so not sure if it's just me a major flaw on the site). [/face]

I have just finished reading The kite Runner and really enjoyed it. It takes you through quite a few emotions. Quite different from a lot of the books I usually read but I love the way this author writes. Must look out for a Thousand splendid suns now.

[face=Comic Sans MS]I've still not got round to reading A Thousand Splendid Suns. Some of the ladies in my Book Group were talking about it the other day and it reminded me that I must bring it nearer the top of my list - again![/face]

You have something to look forward to Hepzi. :) This was one of those books that almost made me cry when I finished it- felt heartbroken, as I was sure not to find a book as good as that again.

The film Kite runner was also good but not as good as the book. It was really sad in places and very thought provoking I found

Started 'A Thousand Splendid Suns' and just couldn’t get into it, strange for me as normally can read anything and everything...
