Post by jewel » Thu Dec 04, 2014 11:50 am

According to this article, Yemen is at the top - no surprise there then.

Sadly, they only seem to have listed five - perhaps the others make for uncomfortable reading? :ni:

From whose point of view are these the worst countries for women? I often wonder what Egyptian women think about us, we work, we raise the children, we worry about the bills, most of us don't have a large extended family to help in time of difficulties, probably many feel sorry for us. Lots of of Egyptian ladies don't have to work, if they do they are not expected to hand over their salaries to provide food for the family. The financial responsibilities are the mens, they are protected by their men folk. We may see it as control but not having been raised in the culture how can we judge? Not every country want what we want in the west and to be honest I don't always think we have got it right and we certainly don't have the right to preach.

Why is it when the world needs to highlight a problem, it is always Muslims that are used and seem to top any list? The world population of Muslims is approximated at 1.7 billion, yet this is only 23% of the total world population. So who is doing the calculations? The other 77%?

Could be the way women are treated? For example, FGM, the misogynistic attitudes of the men, and above all the very common practice of giving girls for marriage to older men. Look up " thighing" :sk

Perhaps no coincidence then which are the worst countries for women.

Don't tell me all these things don't happen in the UK. Britain is reputedly the capital of Europe for performing private FMG operations. Sort yourselves out over there before looking at other countries.

The difference is Carrie that in the UK it is now illegal.

Female genital mutilation (FGM) is illegal in the UK. It’s also illegal to take a British national or permanent resident abroad for FGM or to help someone trying to do this.
The maximum sentence for carrying out FGM or helping it to take place is 14 years in prison.

This year the a Government introduced tough new measures against it.

I read the study, seems quite factual using a matrix of indices against which women have been measured. The evidence seems empirically sourced. I don't see where anybody is judging or preaching. Seems pretty factually stated and I'd say that living in extreme poverty and having minimal to no freedom of choice are pretty significant factors overall as to the state and condition of women.

What is the difference between comparing and judging?

Did I have automatic opportunities to educate myself? Yes.
Did I have the ability to control the reproductive functions of my body? Yes.
Did I have freedom of choice? Yes.
Was I a complete equal to men in the workplace? Mostly but there is/was tokenism, affirmative action programs, glass ceilings and wage disparity when I first started working however society here values equality of women and men which means I did have the ability to change my status in life. Can women living in the countries listed to that?

It is great for women if they want to live life as they have it now but what if they don't? There is nothing more tragic than a woman having true abilities to change the world and being denied these due to the oppression of a society run by men.

FGM has been illegal in Egypt since 2008, with penalties ranging from three months to two years in prison and fines of up to 5,000 Egyptian pounds ($715).

I don't see what your point is. The law is flouted in both countries. :dv

Remember this teenage girl that died in Egypt BY?

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/women/womens ... ourts.html

It would appear the law is, like many other things in Egypt, selective and not consistent.

'But six years on, FGM remains endemic here. Shockingly, Unicef figures reveal that more than 90 per cent of married Egyptian women aged between 15 and 49 have faced the procedure - one of the highest rates in the world. It typically involves cutting off parts of the female genitalia.'

Oh yes BY and the only reason we have it in the UK at all is due to past uncontrolled mass immigration !

LLL great answer! :up

Jewel,

I was commenting particularly on your statement to Carrie: "The difference is Carrie that in the UK it is now illegal."

My [only] point is that this is not a "difference", as FGM is also illegal in Egypt.

I am well aware of breaches of these laws in both countries, but that is irrelevant in the context of my post, and yours to Carrie.

I have encountered your techniques before: if one is not winning an argument then one should muddy the water. I may well be guilty of this myself, before everyone jumps on me. :shark:
