Looking for a Camera.....

Post by Who2 » Sun Sep 08, 2019 8:14 am

My camera has finally given up the ghost, the third from 'Crack-Converters.
They were dead cheap as mobiles became popular.

So does anyone know of a camera shop in Luxor or a cash-converter type store ?
Ps: Also looking for a VHS Player remember them ?
Any help greatly received, 'her next door is currently cleaning my patio 'o-ahhing! at the kittens,
whilst supping on an apricot cordial... 8)

I Love boxes, especially old ones... That one is really nice.. :up

I assume those 2 phones were "liberated" from the tomb of Moses. :D

To be fair, they look ideal for making and reciveing phone calls, which many people just want a phone for anyway.
The drug dealers use that kind of phone here in Liverpool, for obvious reasons, the River Mersey must be full of them by now.. 8)

What grieves me is that if you want Internet at home, they charge you for a phone line and a number, so this adds to the cost
Given that a landline phone is only capable of making and reciving calls and nothing else, they are still enfrocing 20th centruy technology on the broadband consumer which most dont want, as we all have mobiles and can make our calls for free.

Roll on 5G and above, when we will have fast wireless internet and not be tied down by phone lines.
Vodaphone do offer this service, but its expensive..
Copper wires in the ground and on telegraph poles. so old hat and a waste of resources.

Anyhow, good luck with the camera search, Horus is into his cameras, so maybe he can recommend one if you specify a budget. :up

Yes JL I do have several cameras as photography is one of my hobbies, I am always taking pictures when I see something of interest so on most accasions I have a conventional camera with me, usually a cheap 'Point & Shoot' slipped into my pocket. Probably the most suitable for that is something like a Nikon 'Coolpix' although I have to be honest and say that more often than not I just use my phone's camera. There are several reasons for that, the biggest one being it is more convienient, for example if I have my dog on a leash or carrying something in my hand I can just one handedly point my phone and say "shoot" and the phone takes a picture,(good for Who2 when he is posing with his mates ;) ) if pointed towards myself I can just briefly show the palm of my hand and it takes a picture. When I compare images taken on both phone and camera, the phone usually comes out better so there is not a loss of quality and the resolution is just as high. Nowdays I only use my larger cameras if I am doing something a bit special and need steady shots. I know that Who2 is very resistant to modern phone technology but I would suggest that he could buy himself a second hand camera phone that would be far better and probably as cheap as him buying a cheap seconds hand camera. Now if he is talking about some serious photography of the type seen in magazines then he needs something like a decent Cannon, Fuji, or Nikon which will not be cheap.

I agree about those phones JL, real museum pieces :lol:

Both great cameras :up ............. if you want to use film, in that case the last thing you want to be buying is cheap second hand camera in Egypt. :D Just looked on a local selling page in my county and I could have bought about ten old cameras and all the lenses for about £50, basically as no one uses them anymore, digital cameras beat them hands down. 8)

No doubt you are referring to the Leica M8 the successor to the M8, but you never owned one, 8) nor a Hasselblad, their top end H5D costs over $45,000 and the cheaper XD1 at around $9,000 (lenses extra) although you can pick up a second hand one (body only) for a couple of grand, but I doubt that anyone shopping around Luxor for a second hand camera is in that price range. You can still pick up the old 35mm film cameras for less than a couple of hundred quid if you are into that end of photography or maybe cheaper in second hand shops, I have seen the odd one in a charity shop window, but you cannot be sure of the condition, like all SLR cameras the shutter mechanism is often the first thing to go faulty, so buyer beware.

Caesar sic in omnibus,

My old man knew his latin, given he was Cambridge educated and a Medical Doctor..

I have often wondered what the f*ck is wrong with good old English, ?
instead of using latin names for biology and medicine.
Same as in Law.. :tk

Personally I always found it a bit pretentious, People quoting Latin,
Which is odd when you consider the origin of the word pretentious...

Pretentious is a "loanword" due to the fact that it owes its origins to the French language word Prètentieux
which by itself is derived from the Medieval Latin term Praetensus meaning False or Hypocritical profession.

I would agree :up and worst still are those who insist upon posting the dictionary definition of just about anything and everything in the presumption that the rest of us do not already know the meaning and I am not referring to you ;)

"underlying presumptions about human nature"
the acceptance of something as true although it is not known for certain.
"the presumption of innocence"

Law

"the planning policy shows a general presumption in favour of development"
synonyms: assumption, supposition, presupposition, belief, thought, guess, expectation, judgement, surmise, conjecture, speculation, hypothesis, postulation, premise, generalization, inference, deduction, conclusion
"this presumption may be easily rebutted"
2.
behaviour perceived as arrogant, disrespectful, and transgressing the limits of what is permitted or appropriate.
"he lifted her off the ground, and she was enraged at his presumption"
synonyms: brazenness, audacity, boldness, audaciousness, temerity, arrogance, egotism, front, presumptuousness, pertness, forwardness;

More
cockiness, shamelessness, insolence, impudence, bumptiousness, impertinence, effrontery, face, cheek, cheekiness, gall;
rudeness, incivility, impoliteness, disrespect, disrespectfulness, familiarity, freshness;

Translate presumption to
Use over time for: presumption
