So Major Thom, does this mean you and Mrs. M.T are having to re-think your plans for the holiday return to Luxor?

Unfortunately, thousands of pieces of luggage don't arrive at destination with passengers every year. This is not a problem exclusive to Luxor, Cairo, or even Egyptair. I well remember my first ever flight London to Ouagadougou via a number of stops for picking up passengers and fuel, and an overnight in Moscow airport. I quickly had to go to a street tailor to make me a top from local fabric, and a length for a wrap around skirt - all very much in the style of the local Niger women. I still have it somewhere. My rucksack and I were finally reunited in the UK some 6months plus later.

Alas, that has not been the only time my hold baggage has not arrived with me on either the outward or return journey - but it has always turned up eventually.

I'm sure if your friends have any sense, they will be more than adequately insured for such inconvenience - replacement of essential items etc. In deed, I'm reasonably convinced that there are travellers who fund their next holiday wardrobe on missing luggage claims.

But MT would be devastated if his luggage was mislaid en route to Egypt.

Where would he find the elegant man-about-town couture he’s now used to in grubby old Luxor?

Major Thom,
Just a thought, whatever it was that caused your friends to be ill may not have been food poisoning in the terms you are thinking - e-coli, salmonella. It could be something more like ameobic dysentry. There would be no harm in seeing another doctor, and it may even be wise to do, because even if they are appearing to be on the mend, they could in fact become symptom-less carriers. They would need to do poo and, possibly, blood samples to find that out though.

I doubt, if he arrived with his luggage, anyone in Luxor would know that a certain style of suit and cap was an indicator of choice of television programme viewing.

After what our friend has now told us, we have changed our minds and have no intention of coming back now. They told us how the place has changed the cost of visas and what you need to do, also how the passport office is not Consistant. Don't worry Carrie what you say has now swung into action. Like us the persons finances provide for them to mve to a more civil, organised, consistant country where they are aporeciated and not treated has money cows. I honestly do not think either myself or wife would like to see our old villa now. To me it prves even more that people are clinging on there wasting their lives away and having as much fun as a dog chained and tied to a tree in 45C. At least 14 years in Luxor and a good bit of travelling in the past 24 months has made our friend realise, there is life everywhere else, but not in Luxor. In the case that has gone missing was a laptop, sentimental items, an IPadetc etc. it is now over 24 hours since the flight and on the website the message is still the same, "STILL TRACKING" In other words we have not a clue what has happened and nor do we care..... Who the hell would want to fly EgyptAir? How many times has this happened to people? We all must know of someone whose luggage has missed an ongoing flight, or gone missing.... We have been to Australia 4 times on multi stop flights and its never happened once, but then again we do not fly NODDY AIR!

No surprises there then.

Hmm... why on earth would anyone put a laptop, ipad etc in a case to go into the hold? Sentimental items - well I guess they could be of a size too large for hand luggage, but even so, it is a common sense rule that you keep all valuables with you at all times when travelling.

I appreciate there was a time, but a relatively brief time in air travel history, when all electronic items did have to be packed in the hold, but as I understand it that rule has been removed/relaxed in the last year or so. It may still be in place in some parts of the world, but a far as I'm aware you can pack electronics in your hand luggage when exiting Egypt.

As I have already pointed out - suitcases go missing by their thousands around the world every year. A very high proportion of them are reunited - intact - with their owners. As I have also mentioned, I have experienced my hold luggage not arriving at a destination at the same time as me. This has never happened to me when flying with Egyptair. I am not familiar with 'NODDY AIR'.

When did the cost of a visa change? I must have missed that. The last time I looked - two weeks ago - a Tourist Visa bought on entry was still $20.

People who have chosen to visit a North African country.

Alhamdulilah, I must have been lucky the 150+ times, I have boarded Egyptair. I have also been lucky with other airlines - the only time my luggage was missing, was when my Egyptair flight from Luxor was delayed. I was escorted to International Departures in Cairo, and my luggage was delivered to my front door in Copenhagen next day.

All you would have to do was buy a sticker, unless of course you intended to stay for more than a month. They accept Euros at the airport.

It is my impression that some holiday makers become overwhelmed when suddenly finding themselves in an exotic place when all they expected was to relax at a pool. They return for more, hardly wondering what it means to be in Africa, because it is only a cheap charter trip away from home.

It took me some years to realise that Luxor attracted other forms of tourism than sightseeing. I was a backpacker, living a very humble life on the East Bank, though I had more money than today and could have allowed myself the luxury I knew from Europe, but why go to a poor country for that? As a city girl, I would probably not have survived the first years without frequent trips to Cairo where I had a network of likeminded friends. I did not even consider anything but taking the train and staying at cheap hotels. I knew no foreigners in Luxor, but I discovered myself.

14 years ago, I found what I was looking for in Luxor. If all I wanted was to party, I would have stayed in my hometown, where we have a nightlife and lots of entertainment for lovers of music and dance. I love partying in Cairo and Luxor, but if I did not enjoy local culture, I would not go so far as to make Egypt my home most of the year and it has not stopped me from visiting other countries. I still do not know what is wrong with living in two countries and never get enough of what each place has to offer.

Luckily I've only ever once had a suitcase go missing, and that was NOT one of the many times I've flown Egyptair, but with the world's No 1 airline Qatar Airways. Luckily for me most of the items in the suitcase belonged to my then 15yr old son, and he wasn't bothered at all as he would have quite happily worn the same Liverpool FC Tshirt he'd travelled in for the rest of the holiday. (It didn't come to that - The missing luggage was brought to the door the next day)

I am very pleased that your friends have decided to leave Egypt MT I am sure that it will be beneficial to their mental and physical health.
You always seem to imply however that those who remain only do so because they are financially unable to leave. Why does everything have a monetary base for you? You complain as do your friends that they and you were seen as nothing more than cash cows. I wonder why? Once when I think the average salaries of Egyptians was being discussed you said how awful and that you spent more than that each month on chicken for your dog. Was I impressed NO. I found it disgusting, not the amount you paid but the fact that you would put Egyptians down so much. Completely disrespectful.
That seems to be the main problem you had here. You expected Egyptians to respect and look up to you because you had more money than them. Sorry it doesn't work like that. You don't earn respect like that. Rather you are taken advantage of and I for one don't blame the people for doing so.
I seems to be a lesson that has not been learned at all though. You shop at Next, so what? Are we supposed to be impressed? Doesn't impress me or the majority of people. A deep desire to impress by one's material acquisitions just shows the depth of a persons insecurity.
Now you have left but your experience of Luxor still seems to be eating away at you. That doesn't lead to happiness or peace of mind. You are now living somewhere you say you love, I hope your friends soon find themselves in the same situation.

Of course MT won’t take any notice. His character has taken years to form and won’t change now.

Moreover it’s obvious that (along with his visitors from Luxor) he’s not the sharpest knife in the drawer! To have lived in Egypt for a decade or more and not realised it’s a third world country with all the concomitant problems of poverty, dirt, corruption etc. displays a level of stupidity which is positively breathtaking.

Wow how time flies, was he really there for over 10 years? it seems like only yesterday when we were reading his posts on how he planned to move there and bring in his specialised team of people to build his villa, time is passing far too quickly. :sd

Today we were told that our friends luggage has arrived in Larnaca, well thats not much good because our friend has been left Cyprus now since Saturday. EgyptAir are now wiping their responcibility of the missing luggage, and saying they have got it to where it supposed to be. Egypt Air knew he destination and failed miserably to look after the luggage so they should be entirely responcible for the luggage and owner to be repatriated. Who would want to travel with a National Airline that registers and sells tickets for a multistop or just a one stopover and cannot even uphold their obligations. I have said before that when we moved to Cyprus we sa from the aircraft window luggage being taken off because the hold was full. In which case they need to purchase larger planes or cut down in luggage one can take. Its happening far too often and its always Cairo that has the problem....

No matter what I brought to Egypt I paid customs on it, so your government benefited. I was fortuanate to have had good jobs and good wages, so what I did with my income was entirely up to myself. Do you honestly think I would want an Egyptian to look up to me, you must be dreaming. That would be the last thing. To be honest if I was not railroaded into having my villa built by local tradesmen (I regret that very much, the cost of putting it right was almost the same as the cost of the villa in the first place) It had to be replastered, re ceramiced, new external stone, repainted, the paint was put on just where it could be seen....
