renewing uk passport online.

Post by Dusak »

If anyone has used this system to renew their passport, can you tell me roughly how long it takes to have it returned from point of receiving it at the office for renewal. And which is better, Fed-EX or DHL to have it returned, or do the passport office make this choice.

I did mine last year from Turkey, gave it to a friend to post next day delivery in the UK, and received it 2 weeks later by DHL. Can't see that it would be any different in Egypt, although I remember when Carrie renewed hers a couple of years ago she had to go to Cairo to collect it as they refused to deliver it to Luxor.

It was a nightmare Dusak, some of it my fault. At first I sent the wrong photos off, my fault, I had to have my rental agreement translated and notarized because the office in the UK refused to accept my address they insisted on a postcode. I haven't got a proper address here my street has no name.
I sent my passport via DHL they were good and it was delivered back to the consul offices in Cairo because for some reason I never understood it couldn't be delivered to Luxor DHL office. I had to take a trip up to Cairo to collect the passport from there.
The correct photo's were taken by Amun Digital near the bottom of TV Street, if you have them done there just make sure they don't photo shop them no alterations to the photos at all. Read all the information on the web site of the passport office very carefully and follow their instructions. Good luck.

You can now take your own photo and upload it as part of the online application process - I did this for my other half a few months ago.

It was a bit of a faff as the photos I took kept getting rejected for no apparent reason. I'd advise getting as close as possible to a neutral coloured wall in natural light. Despite the effort, it's probably still easier (and cheaper!) than going to a studio or a booth.

More instructions here.

My new passport was delivered to the Cairo offices, someone phoned me from the Cairo offices to say my passport had arrived, i give permission for DHL to pick my passport up from them, DHL picked it up and delivered it to DHL on Sheraton street Luxor.

My photos were took at one of the shops in Luxor, I just asked for passport photos, they know not to photoshop them, my photo was accepted for my biometric passport.

Yes they rang me from Cairo Keefy to say my passport was there but would not allow DHL to collect it for me, I had to go to the new consulate in Mohandiseen to collect it myself. It seems that like the Egyptian authorities with the visa's the UK bureaucrats are just as bad.

I seem to remember that MT used DHL to have his delivered to the local office here in luxor. my be he will see this and reply. I have four months before I need it to travel, but wanted to be on the safe side time wise. Don't really want to go to Cairo to pick it up, but if I have to, then so be it. So, the next stupid question is, would I need a passport to get to Cairo via plane. Thanks for the replies.

Then thats a bummer. Do you think I could travel with a copy, don't fancy a ten hour trip.

I very much doubt that a copy would be acceptable.

No not acceptable. Another problem I wanted to go up to Cairo have a night in a hotel then go collect my passport next day but you can't book into an hotel without your passport. So it was an overnight journey up to Cairo off to the consulate on arrival and I came back later that day, by which time I was so tired I slept all the way home.

Thanks all. If they will not except a pick up, I will have to play the age card, plus my long term recovery of my dislocated hip. Getting a doctors letter, or phone call confirming this shouldn't be a problem $ :D

Dusak I sent mine to the UK for renewal, it was couriered back to the office in Cairo. I then took a hand written signed letter to the DHL Office in Luxor, giving them authority to pick it up from Cairo and courier it to Luxor. When it arrived in Luxor, the office phoned me and I just went in to pick it up. From sending my old passport in to receiving my new one took 13 days. I found it a very easy process really. Just took a bit of thinking about... Hope this helps Dusak.

At least I got a good deal on my flights this time, 13,900Le, last time it was 18,600Le, and as someone pointed out, had to pay an extra cost for a window seat, but this was relatively cheap at 175Le each way. The guy told me they had a special offer on at the moment if I wanted to upgrade on the international legs of my journey to business class at a cost of only an extra 19,000Le, considered it for micro second.

Use your old passport most can't read the expiry date anyhow.

I do have the old passport carrie, they returned it with the new one, but they cut the corner off to prevent it being used. :D

Anyway......the old passport is presumably stuck in Cairo with the new one?

Just authorise a courier to pick them up. Seems to work for most people.
