Saturday Morning Shopping..

Post by Who2 » Sun Jun 02, 2019 4:23 pm

It's become a regular thing me our mate the 'translator and Mr 'Gruin (camel beard) and we hit the shops.
We have the regular visits, know every shop seller we visit we know them all well, it's usually quite a 'craic.

One of our things is to discover things, I don't read Arabic but that doesn't matter one iota.
If it looks interesting buy it and find out later, Axel & I both do this all the time, discovering some good,
some bad and some tasty things.

This week I picked up a plastic container and thought they might be marinated anchovies.
Axel was debating his liver, was it sheep or cow, I said "if it's a sheep it would be 7ft high with that sized liver.
Turned out it was buffollo, it's for his misses Pâté.

'The great plains of The West decimated for a bit of Pâté. wtf.

We search strange shops looking for strange things,
B & Q is like 'saturday morning pictures, foraging around hunting for 4 candles, hammer wedges, ect.

We end up in Hamees drinking smoking and chatting with our egyptian pals..
Before returning loaded down to de-'bright-side....

The marinated & 'fermented fish in oil, are weird, an acquired taste which I am slowly acquiring.
My mate said "it's Melougha, obviously some marinated fish and tastes a bit like ripe camembert.

I can't find it any of my Egyptian cookbooks or even in my Larousse.
He says 'down in Aswan they mix it with tahina, oil, lemon and shatta.... 8)

Ps: 'Mind you, I would have rather gone to Saturday morning flicks at The Ritz.

'Stinking Bishop or a ripe Camembert and a Pont L'Eveque is to die for.....
Nb: Get one of those old string shopping bags, hang them out the window, we did that in Paris..

Sounds similar to the Roman 'Garum' a stinking sauce made from fermented fish guts and used on just about anything from stews to sweet puddings. :sk

My favourite is when they ask him "who are you?" and he answers "I am death" so the one who put the question says sorry and then shouts, "WHO ARE YOU"

Loved the Saturday mornings cinema - Hopalong Cassidy, Roy Rogers and Trigger, but my favourite was The Cisco Kid. I was also fascinated by Old Mother Riley.

Loved the Cisco Kid, when it first came out it was in black & white then later in a slightly washed out colour.

Arthur Lucan played Old Mother Riley and often appeared with Kitty McShane who was also his wife, but played mother Rileys daughter. Note a very young Hattie Jaques in this clip.

At the Ritz if it was your birthday you received a free ticket for the following week.
I often got 'grassed up kids 'usually my mates shouting "he was up there last week...
At the Granada we used to stretch fishing line across the aisle to trip the kids running down
to the ice cream-lady... 8)
Ps: if we had the money we would purchase 'the biggest stink since hitler stink bombs..

Woke and 3.30 am, ffs so worked on comp and then woke again again at 9.30, 'Im late...'la whaala!
Not a good outlook...
We had a bit of fun bought two budgies as my love-bird 'num nums died last night. That's the 5th or 6th.

Police everywhere, Morsi syndrome, saw a kid get hit by a motor-bike when exiting 'drinkies.
Kid was 'screaming so he was ok!.. 'me ex paramedic, when they used to be called ambulance men.
Got back to 'de bright side and one of the budgies bit me during transfer, and flew off.
So that's 7, unlucky for some....'should have gone to the Ritz... 8)
