The difference between "Hassle" and sheer friendliness from a stranger

Post by hatusu » Thu Apr 11, 2019 10:33 am

I was sitting on the ferry coming back to the West Bank from a trip to the dentist. I was sitting quietly reading my Kindle next to 2 Egyptian ladies dressed all in the traditional black. One of the ladies was on a smart phone chattering away to someone. Suddenly I felt a slight tugging on my sleeve from the lady next to me, but I couldn’t understand what she was trying to tell me. The other lady was handing me her phone and pointing to it urgently. I took hold of the phone very hesitantly thinking it must be some emergency, but the smiling young Egyptian man on the phone reassured me . He was working in England in Manchester, the lady was his mum (the other lady his aunt) and his mum just wanted me to say Hello to him and see what a lovely son she’d got, and what a nice English lady she was sitting next to on the ferry.
Little things like that cancel out so much of the negative things.

I've had similar experiences when in Luxor. In fact I was actually reminiscing over on last night. They really do leave a good feeling.

It's always happening but no one ever reports good news.I was walking along the lower corniche where they tie up the boats and this lady said hello. She and her daughter were loaded down with kitchen and bathroom stuff, they had been on a shopping spree for the daughters forthcoming wedding. I offered to lend a hand and off we all trotted to the ferry. The mother insisted that she pay my fare on the ferry. Much amusement with the men who take the money when I insisted that they don't take 5le off her for me. We then walked up to the bus station, I have been invited to the wedding. Wont be attending don't do weddings but like Hatusu it made my day.
