Classic Fawlty Towers

Post by hatusu »

I was on the roof of a small hotel in Gezira, chatting to a friend. Id almost finished a small glass of wine, about half an inch left, so as the waiter, a very young man, was passing I pointed at the glass and said “Another glass please” and kept on chatting to my friend. While I was talking I noticed at the bar there was quite a debate going on between the 2 waiters, and shortly afterwards I was a little bemused when the young man brought a much larger wine glass (empty) and very carefully poured the half inch of wine from the small glass into the larger one and left. No more wine was forthcoming to fill the wine glass.
After staring at the glass for some time the light dawned. He had taken me quite literally. It was all my fault and I should have asked for another glass of wine, not another glass!

That image has helped get my morning off to a good start.

All at least you got to keep your wine. Everywhere we go here currently they want to whisk away our glasses when there's still a mouthful or three left! oddly, they always ask if we have finished our food, but never beverages. One tried to remove my of hot chocolate with three marshmallows waiting at the bottom for the coup de grace. I warned him he would reach Paradise sooner than he expected if he tried. We have got into the habit of reminding each other to keep holding our glass as we near the end. Great service otherwise.
