Investment in Egypt

Post by Major Thom »

There seems to be money coming into Egypt in the form of aid and to help secure the .country, a good thing. However do we feel that one of the most important things is to get the infrastructure of the .country correct. How can we keep factories going if there are regular power cuts, especially in the Summer months, normally the power goes off and so does the water supply. Maybe it's different for Cairo because most of the aid is going into the City and not many other places. Factories create jobs.
Where I am in Luxor we have a water cut every day from 12 midnight until 5am due to the pumps being turned off to save power. Many visitors expect water and electric on demand 24/7 and rightly so. I believe that investing in things that are not important at the moment are a waste of time. I also believe that investment should be across the ?Country and not in one area like it seems at the moment.
My taxi driver told me yesterday that Egypt has given 2 or 3 islands in the Red Sea to Saudi, I can see Saudi developing these islands for tourist developments, they now have both the money and the initiative to do so. This will mean a few more Red Sea tourist resorts, taking away from the Egyptian Red Sea resorts.

It may be that only Middle Eastern countries will aid Egypt in the future, because especially in Luxor too many people have lost much money in business investments. For Europeans there seems to be no security in owning a business, a flat, villa or apartment, things are changing and I think that nobody here feels secure any more, or in fact will admit it. Many who own properties just feel trapped in a very insecure but beautiful city.

Luxor is a relatively small place, there are many many cities in Egypt that are much bigger and more important. Most of which have very few if any foreigners living there.
Living here we tend to have a Luxor centric view of what is happening, going through the desert on the way to Cairo, I noticed lots of pylons being built presumably to improve the power supply, I noticed many factories en route, towns and cities bustling.
Now I am not trying to say that everything is perfect but foreigners living here and their feeling of lack of security, in regards to owning property or businesses, is a very unimportant blip on the landscape, taken on the whole.
