English Teaching or other work ?

Post by Keithfazackerley »

Hello,
New to this forum. Thinking of spending winters in Luxor. Is there any possibility of picking up some English teaching. I am ESL trained.looking to supplement pension just a little and occupy some time.
Other possibilities ?

Hi Keithfazackerley and welcome to the forum. There are a number of expats already teaching English, as to whether they are trained to do so is another matter. All do illegally, without work permits. In this current climate of visa clampdowns I certainly would not recommend advertising the fact that you are willing to do this on this forum, let alone take the chance of getting away with it, especially with Stepping Stones on the hunt for prey. And the pay, I believe, is peanuts.

Agreed Dusak. I tried looking into the same thing only teaching further down the road. Because of my teaching experience I've been asked by many to come out and live in Luxor and elsewhere but the risks are too high along with very low pay and conditions.

My advice is if you want to pursue your teaching career would be to see what your chances of getting the appropriate visa (at cost) are and see what's available. You will be more marketable with the right documentation.

Right documentation for starters means a minimum of a bachelor's degree.

And don't forget that you have to report these extra earnings to the authorities in the UK.

I have seen a number of adverts elsewhere on the internet for English Language Teachers. As soon as you ask if they will be applying for a work permit for you, they go quiet. Be warned and be careful.

I have a friend who taught in Cairo then moved to Alex, she had all the appropriate qualifications her employers got her the work permit etc. but she got the job because she applied from the UK to an advert.
If you are thinking of just coming over here picking up a bit of work forget it. Your work permit doesn't allow you just to work here, is it specific to a certain place of employment if you leave your job to take another then it is cancelled. Your new employers must apply for another permit and they are expensive so not too many prepared to do it. Certainly not for someone who just wants a few hours to pass the time and give them an interest.

As Fazackerley is a Liverpudlian name I believe ! It would be hilarious to listen to locals speaking with a 'scouse accent...

You aren't going to find an employer who is willing to go to the effort and expense of getting you a work permit for part-time seasonal work to fill up your free time. These are for professional, career-minded people with skills that Egyptians don't have working full time jobs. The people I know who have gotten work permits for teaching English (in Cairo) had TESOL MAs, not just some certificate.

Not sure why an MA would be necessary. Other than to teach ESOL teachers.
Sounds like qualification inflation.

I have a number of post graduate qualifications as well as a EFL qualification. But thanks for the advice.

Because if you want to teach at a university, do you think they are just going to accept a certificate? The masters is the standard degree for such jobs worldwide.

Glyph where does he say he wants to teach at a university? All he was asking was what was the possibility of picking up a few hours teaching, here in Luxor I think that has been fully covered and already dropped as an idea.

Because the people I know with work permits to teach English as a foreign language work at a university.

As was also pointed out by someone above, some rinky dink school may say they will get you a work permit, but then wind up not doing so and that is likely to happen in Luxor, even if you have the required qualifications.

The point being there are no institutions in Luxor of the stature or financial resources that are likely to want to go to the trouble of doing things in a legal way when hiring an English teacher. Only big name international organizations and universities will bother here in Egypt and they have higher standards for their hiring requirements. A master's degree is in no way a qualification inflation when you are talking about a work permit being given only to those who have skills an Egyptian doesn't have. You don't hire just anyone from abroad because they happen to have been born in an English speaking country and give them a work permit--you look for the exceptional.

If you're looking for English teaching positions in the Gulf an MA is sometimes the minimum qualification plus a CELTA of course.

Mr Keith if you're suitably qualified with a minimum of two years experience and want to teach in Egypt I suggest you look at the British Council in Cairo. They're always looking for staff.
