Flight Cancellation

Post by hatusu »

Ive just been advised of the cancellation of my direct flight to London cancelled on the 6 June. I am extremely surprised as I would have thought that apart from being one of the hottest months it is the first day of Ramadan, and I would have thought the plane would have been virtually full. Likewise my return flight in August. Any ideas why ?

Why do you assume that everyone is flying out of Egypt on the first day of Ramadan? I arrived back in Egypt in the middle of the night after the 1st day of Ramadan last year and there were plenty of people coming, although someone tried to cut their way to the front of the customs line and it nearly caused a riot by others who were really pressed to make it home before suhur.

I'm not "assuming" - I know from previous experience that just about every seat has been occupied in past years at this time, with lots of Egyptians on the flight as,well as tourists and expats.

Our flight out last year was full leaving Cairo, that was the 3rd day of Ramadan. There were a few flying to Dubai and then onward.
This year we will stock the freezers up before hand, get a few extra gallons of Benzine, and the things we regularly use, you cannot rely on regular shop hours, bolt the gates, we leave this year a week after Ramadan finishes.
Ramadan is not a religious festival for myself and wife, being Christians, but we respect local people's celebrations.

Every flight going out also comes in. If it is a charter flight catering to foreigners, maybe there aren't enough tourists who want to spend Ramadan in June in Luxor coming in to make it worthwhile to fly in to Luxor, even if there are a handful of expats who want to leave. As a hotel proprietor leaving during Ramadan every year you must know that business would drop.

BA has stopped selling tickets in Egyptian pounds as of a few days ago as they are having trouble getting the money they have previously received here for tickets out of the country. Other airlines are threatening to do the same or stop flights to Egypt for the same reason.

I don't think it can be a charter flight because we are not allowed to use them.

Certainly sounds like EgyptAir to me as their direct non-stop flight is on a Monday. I can't get details of that flight and date on the EgyptAir website, but expect that Hatusu went to the EgyptAir office on the corniche.

At the end of the day companies will not fly aircraft that are between 30 and 50% full it just does not make financial sense. We can complain, campaign and beat our heads against walls on this but it will not change. Even if every European in Luxor was balloted on this subject, there would not be anything like enough of us here to change the operators minds. Why pay £350 for a flight to Europe consisting of 4 hours flying time, when you can pay an extra £250 and fly to the other side of the world. These prices need to be put in prospective first. But if you look at them, even the budget airlines were making a mint, or were when they were flying.

I would be more for looking to live in a place not so isolated, and have regular and often flights, if I was concerned. But, alas I am not, we have the Red Sea resorts 5 long hot and sticky hours looking at miles and miles of sand, in a taxi to catch a flight. Maybe could go to Masa Alam (Where is that, in Tourist talk) an hour or so closer. It comes across that people seem concerned about flights, and the feeling of isolation, my advice to anyone would be to do something about it. Another thing, I have only been away from Egypt for Ramadan once in 6 years, it does not bother me too much, just prepare in advance. Like many I accept Egypt for what it is, wharts and all. Oh! Did I hear the word touché?

You can't have it both ways MT, either the airlines were flying half full and making a loss or making a "mint". Budget airlines as you refer to them are often just as expensive as Egypt Air and sometimes more so but it just depends on where you want to go. I for one do not want to go to Heathrow.

Seems a Catch 22, that will go on forever then. They may start selling off parts of the International Airport, its only running at maybe 10%. What will become of the International Hospital, will it loose its status? You know we can be saying all sorts of different things, saying this wants seeing to that wants seeing to, chipping in with ideas etc etc. But its like Hello!!!! People do not want to come here anymore, be it for a holiday, or any other thing. I remember I think A4, and the Dr, saying Luxor will become a specialist place, and not a general holiday place like it used to be.

I think for myself, I do like to chip in the things I see going wrong, but in the future it seems a bit pointless, because nothing will get done anyway, so I will just sit back and watch the world float by, either along the Nile or the Canal's.

If I remember though when I was coming to Egypt 3 or 4 times a year, the brochures used to tell you the dates of Ramadan, and explain that there would be limited shops open and limited services. They would also explain that many places would stop serving alcohol. I don't drink alcohol any more so it does not bother me, and I appreciate the peace and quiet

Its hard to think that Luxor could become such a Cosmopolitan City, the capital of Upper Egypt, no one has thought of it and it seems no one wants it! Instead of taking the place out of the doldrums, it seems people are content to let it slip further into the abyss. When I say Cosmopolitan, I do not mean the HQ of magazine printing. We are entering very choppy seas at the moment.

Who said Luxor was the capital of Upper Egypt, not long ago it was a province of the Qena Governate. Qena is much bigger than Luxor
